Word. I think the Good Life and Native Tongues dudes really laid the foundation for 'backpack' shit.

Pretty much started with DJ Shadow and Kool Keith.

DJ Shadow isn't really connected with the Hip-Hop world is he though? Despite the obvious hip-hop influence I mean.

DJ Shadow is definitely hip-hop it's not rap but Endtroducing is Hip-Hop, his newer stuff falls under the genre of 'Shite'.

Sure, it's fair to label beats on Endtroducing hip-hop, I just didn't realize he was actually associated with Hip-Hop scenes cos there are no MCs on any of his first three albums.

Yeah that proves my point I think. By the mid '80s and DEFINITELY by the mid '90s, hip-hop became so MC centered that to be a DJ without a rapper on it is often even questioned as being hip-hop (foolishly -- hip-hop wouldn't be shit without the breaks). The only reason Shadow ever got associated with trip-hop is because he released instrumental music on a British label.

I like Drake and Kendrick, but not sure they can be termed "musical" geniuses can they? Aren't they just vocalists, for want of a better word?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they don't do any production do they? So if anyone's "changing the game" with Drake, surely it's people like 40?

Say what you will about Drake, but Kendrick Lamar is a lyrical genius, hands down. He's been killing it since Overly Dedicated. I honestly think he's the best thing to have happened to hip hop since the early 2000s. I know that's not the type of "musical" that people were referencing in this thread but lyrics are a part of music so it's appropriate

And it's a collaboration between 40 and Drake, how the beats are tailored for Drake and how Drake's voice is tailored for the beats, which is why I listed them together

Usually i just dig at your age for giggles, but this is one of those things you just have no idea about. This is the equivelent of kids your age going off about classic rock because they've heard some their dads records.

fair enough, but the internet is a wonderful thing when it comes to music education. It's pretty easy to immerse yourself in all the old 90s shit when you've got a powerful tool like the internet at your hands. Obviously it's nowhere near actually living in that period and being a fan of the music then, but wouldnt you agree it helps somewhat?

It was pretty much old school rapping made for the suburban crowd, in the midst of the original gangsta era
