My minibrute was FOB ordered during Namm when it was unveiled, and it was in perfect working order. Just a data point.
Fair, I'm sure it's not the same for everything.

But given the build quality of the BeatStep, might be best to give it a while. Not hurting for a MIDI controller right now anyway.

I went to a music shop the other day and they had the Akai MPC Element, was considering buying it, but i don't think I would use it enough to warrant to purchase it. In a dilemma.

not really producing as much recently and I could do with the money, one went for 660 the other week so I'd be happy with around that

Gents, I need an opinion on something.

My Shruthi-1 is almost finished and I want to take my music making in a different direction. I want to go out of the box, i.e. no laptop. Low cost. Midi keys, into the Shruthi-1, an Akai MPX8 for oneshots/loops/ambience, maybe a Volca beats. Maybe upgrade to fancier hardware later if I'm feeling it.

I want to use something like a Korg Kaoss Pad 3+ but I realise those things are pretty old at this stage. Any suggestions on a more modern alternative? I want to be able to loop, apply effects etc. Also, what's the deal with Alesis mixers? This looks like a pretty amazing price for what it is. Any experience with this mixer?
Feedback wanted.

Why not just get a Kaoss pad...can't see the age being a factor if it does what you want it to?

True. Just thought there might be something better out there that I haven't come across yet. I was looking at the SP-404sx which looks like it could be alternative, albeit a bit pricier.

They're different pieces of kit though. The SP is a sampler with some effects, the Kaoss is a live effects unit that has some sampling capabilities.

The Korg KP3 is a solid piece of kit. Metal housing, touch screen made to be abused : ) I have one. They are quite fun and come with a boat load of FXs (all presets with no parameters to tweak except via the pad). It does sound quite digital and some what lo fi though (which I like in some situations). Its a flavor, just need to know when your music is hungry for it.

You wont find much else like a KP3. Trust me, Ive looked. And what is out there is expensive. There are quite a few kinds of performance oriented analog filters to be had (all out of production sadly), Electrix makes one (Filter Factory) as well as a fun looking 3 FX rack unit (MoFX).

I think its Pioneer they make a DJ FX unit that I hope would be cool at 800 dollars. Finally there is the OTO Biscuit Bit Reducer and live FX unit which is quite pricey at 600 dollars and is, again, a flavor that may not fit every track.

Otherwise you are looking at guitar pedals (pretty much) as far as "tweakable" FX goes.

Opps. Also the Roland EF 303, also out of production.

EDIT: Though I sincerely hope there is a gem I missed and someone will come in here and prove me wrong!

Pretty much the atmosphere of performance FX units intended for electronic music is either botique or out of production.

EFX 500 and EFX 1000, might be able to get a good price on one second hand. My 500 cost me £75.

There is another DJ/studio effects unit, but I'll let you know when I buy one myself as they're f^cking rare

Really? that is a hell of a price on a 500 isnt it? I didnt look into them much as it wasnt terribly exciting to me. Might have a look again...

As for the rare box...keep you sercrets then ;p

There is the option of going Eurorack and customizing your own sound mangling FX unit. I started looking into this and its actually quite amazing what all is available these days.

Yeah it's pretty good, included shipping too. Mate of mine upgraded to the 1000 (which he's also thinking about selling) so nabbed a bargain.

OK. I am looking at these Pioneers, they are not what I was thinking of... so thats cool EDIT: Pioneer DJ RMX series is what I had looked at a while back...

How do you like yours wub? Is it lo fi, noisy, or digital sounding? What do you find yourself using it for?

Also, double checked, for the record you can buy new KP3s still...they have them listend on Sweetwater

I reckon I could pick up a KP3 for a reasonable price second hand. Maybe I should just take the plunge and sell stuff on if I don't like it. It's the live-looping possibilities that I really like!

Thanks for the input guys. :Q:

FWIW I got mine for 170USD on eBay and its been happily rigged to my studio since the fall with no issues. The build quality really is there. My biggest tip would be watch you gain stagning. Get the right mix of gain hitting the KP3, adjust the KP3's output and boost later if needed. The unit has a clip indicator and the signal can get nasty if you push it.

Good to know. I was thinking of putting the output of a mixer through the KP3 or possibly use it as a send so I'd be able to make sure nothing was clipping anyway.

Still got that latent 707 lust going on. Think I might have to bite the bullet next month and get one :u:
I kept thinking about trying to score a reasonably priced TR so I could have a step sequencer that wasnt ultimately tethered to a computer (Maschine), but I feel like the prices on some vintage gear is just stupid these days, but I wasnt really digging anything else as it was mostly botique ish gear. Then Arturia came along and saved the day with the BeatStep. Sequence multiple MIDI channels simulataneously. Cool Sends CV/Gate. Very useful. And can be powered with a standard USB phone charger. Yes. Not to mention you can load scales (with a user defined scale) so you cant tweak pitches per step out of tune. YES. For 99USD FUCK YES

:6:

Given all that, having a TR series box would be badness incarnate 8)
Went for the 707 in the end, bought and paid for 8)

For some reason I feel like I read/heard March somewhere. And yea...totally want one...though I am going to bide my time. Its from a major company, not botique stuff, so not worried I wont find one. To hell with pre ordering though...

@wub: missed your post about the 707. Nice going man : )
