Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for SEPTEMBER, 2010
@mindcontroll
feeling this track, but i mite lowpass the bass in there at the moment and layer it with another, more stronger sub. perhaps a bit more varaition on the one shot bongo in there, possibly a 16 bar loop where hits in slightly more random places. also theres not much high freq info in there (hats, etc), but im guessing that was the feel you were going for. good, i like it.
@c average
the doom of choppin drop works well with the sample you used, i love the bass at 1:47, i think this should be a more re-occuring theme, perhaps even the main drop of the tune. i mite move the bass you have at the drop at the moment to the intro or breakdown of the track insted? just an idea, not bad thou
@shaneynclan
Quality. Care to share some secrets to your drum hits? so punchy.
@Nacklewicket
nice feel to it, but i thin there needs to be more going on. the hats are kind of fast paced and you need something synth or sample wise that needs to bounce off that. sounds like a trumpet type instrument in there, how about finding a short melodic brass loop or something?
----
im looking for some critique on the actual raw sound of the bass. It was made in massive and has been resampled and chopped, etc. Im yet to add a sub which will be the next step. and it dosent have any effects on it either. But i thought id check with the forum heads to see if this "raw" sound is good enough to start piling on the effects, eq, etc.
I basicly want to know if this raw sound is good enough or if it lacks anything before i start compressing, eqing, effecting...... adding a beat, etc. could the raw sound be made better, any tips, please let me know.
Heres the link:

ignore the first 40 secs as ableton decided to start my exported audio from a bit i didnt want it to, cba to change it.
also the drums are just a loop to put the bass into context, ignore them also, only thing im intrested in is the bass.
cheers

Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for SEPTEMBER, 2010
@Mexican Kangaroo-- Really Like the Pads and upper range, percussion is OK, perhaps put some reverb on. As for the bass, for this style you want to be putting it more as midrange, try moving it up an octave, increasing the volume and putting your filter frequencies down
@C Average- I think the drum loop should probably be varied a bit more, try alternating bars with different hats in or mess around with the snare to make it seem more progressive. Otherwise I really like it!
@Kilo Beats, you've got a good basis for a tune there, however youlll need to vary the beat a bit more and maybe stick a sub in on the odd note, but yeah its got that skream esque vibe which the only vibe I like with the tearout stuff
This is my first tune, and I'm not even sure if its dubstep even, but feedback please

really nice pads, did you make them yourself? the tune had a great ambiant feel to it. I can see it working well with a pheleah type sub behind it, something mellow but strong if you get me. add a few descrete bleeps, clicks, noises etc just to spice it up a little i say. mabie the right violin or paino loop could sound good with it.

Here is the updated version of my bass I was asking for feedback on. any comments? tips, opinions?

that would be mucho helpfull.

@ Kilo Beats:
I like the crisp sound of your bass.
However, I'd try to make the wobbles a bit smoother.
Apart from that... sounds sweet.

Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for SEPTEMBER, 2010
@Kilo Beats- The pads are just fiddled with presets hah, busted- but yeah thanks for the feedback-i'm trying to create a sub which works with it atm
Your bass is pretty sweet, sounds professional really. Just for me, I prefer the more metallic noises rather than the Yuy yuy formant business, just my opinion though
@Future Prospect all I can say is Turn the Bass Up!!!, other than that it's sick
Something I made tonight, not really sure where it's going

@hutyluty - im loving those drums and that intro, very ominous and lively! although the kick feels panned to the left...might be me being tired though haha
@kilobeats - its nice to see youve got some good structure going on for your main section, it flows nicely. however with the actually bassline, its very messy at the moment, probably just from a lot of distortion, theres just some unwanted frequences wandering around, but keep at it!
@NRHc - those drum samples are nice when it drops, the whole track is very weighty, i like it...all of the sounds just come together nicely, good work bro.
as for me...
Soundcloud
its a deep vibe that ive been working on for about a week or so now, very slowly haha...any comments are appreciated as always

Hey everyone!
I received a good amount of feedback for the last track i posted up here, and my thanks go out to you all.
I'm sorry I haven't been able to contribute much, I'm trudging through uni assignments and I haven't had much time for much else. I promise once I get a few of these papers out of the way I'll put my ears on some of the great work around here and offer my humble insights
I made this wonk-ass tune just before the semester started, and i think it has some cool ideas. However it's built mostly out of hi-res LPF event editting and is lacking in musicality and variety... sort of like how i view some of caspa's tunes.
I even threw in a bill hicks sample which I adore! That may interest some of the Tim Leary fans out there, if you catch my drift.
Anyways, check it out... and if anyone can give advice on how to add some musicality/harmony/melody to this, I'd be totally open to especially that.
Thanks again!

@Mortal- Really like it!, perhaps the drums are too loud, in your face, maybe use a bit of reverb on them but otherwise it's great. Really reminds me of The Knife Album Tomorrow In A Year, check it out!
@Brex- Absolutely love it man, the feel, the drums the bass, the sample all fit into it amazingly, would love to hear it when it's finished mate.
@Spire- Again, really great, I'm actually blown away by how good these are, need to up my game. Drums are great and relaly love the breaky end.
@Wobbafet- Very nice indeed, I like the sparseness- not sure if the sample quite works though. For added musicality, I'm not an expert but I'll give you my two pence. You might want to either- try sticking a low end pad in, quietly, in the same key as the rest of the piece and/or maybe put in a little echo of the main line a couple of beats behindon a high end synth, perhaps a couple of notes above? I'm just floating ideas, they'll probs sound awful, but yeah..
This is me trying to sound a bit like Distance

Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for SEPTEMBER, 2010
One of my current works in progress, not sure how to finish it, feel i'm stuck in a rut at the moment :\
Soundcloud
@hutyluty - Nice atmosphere and sounds going on though the track doesn't really go anywhere. The lead at about 2.30 is really nice, more stuff like that needs to happen earlier in the tune! too long a build up with not enough happening to maintain tension basically. It gets tiring. Tune has potential for sure, one other thing is the drums seem a bit quiet to me, maybe push them up a bit?
@mortal - Like the dark sounds going on in the background but again theres not really much of anything going on in this tune. It's nice and moody but feels too empty to me. It's good to have space in a tune but there is too much in this one XD The good news is it's an excellent base to write the rest of the tune over, some subtle melodic leads here and there would really help flesh it out imo.
@kilobeats - I absolutely loathe those stupid vowel sound wobble basses so I'm not the best person to comment on this... :\ you seem to have done it exactly the same as everyone else though...I guess that's what you were going for though I wouldn't count it as a good thing... also I know it's not exactly what you meant but your sub sounds like it's playing way too high, maybe knock it down an octave or play it in a lower key??
Barely anyone leaving feedback in this thread :s had to trawl quite far back to find people to comment on.

@ Sirius, absolutely loving those background piano's mate, really emotional track, digging it already!
I'm guessing the snare is getting some work? Not really liking the snare if I may say so.
@ Paravrais, the strings seem a bit odd in that one, loving the drums tho!
@ Wobbafet, such a trippy track, so in love with that bassline that kicks in at 2:50, sounding big!
@ Spire, nice work experimenting, it ain't something I would listen to daily but an amazing job! @ 2:22 it was quite "thefuckisdis?" but I'm liking it.
@ Mortal, really dark tune right there mate, love the atmosphere.
@ Hutyluty, Snare sounds weird to me on that one, digging the synth that kicks in at 1:58 tho!
@ Kilo beats, really not digging the overly use of "yois" you have more potential man! (Personal opinion)
@ C AverRage, loving the piano and the melody (I'm in love with some piano in dubstep tunes) the drop was pretty unexpected so a big up to you there!
@ NRHc, bassline that kicks in @ 0:30 was a pretty downer for me, enjoyed the ambient intro tho!.
@ Claridge, really loving that one, I'm absolutely amazed at that one to be honest, can't look for anything bad to say!
As for myself: Soundcloud
My goal was to make this one really mellow but it turned into a brostep-fest.
I'm also completely clueless what to do after that 8 bar loop after the drop.
Would love to have some feedback!

As for your tune, I like it man, real pretty. One big thing that annoyed me though was I hate that kick. Really ruins the vibe of the tune when it comes in. Another much smaller thing is you might wanna give the growly midrange a bit more attack to get it to slide a bit better. All in all you've got something shaping up pretty damn nicely, would love to hear it finished.
@Cubicle - Like the intro but the drop is lacking somewhat, need another layer on the midrange maybe? also not too fond of the progression on the midrange section, one of the notes feels a bit out to me. As for where to take it, just expand and add progression to that drop, do some fancy automation on the lead growl and your away. Got potential, good ideas but sounds very unfinished.
Re: WORKS-IN-PROGRESS for SEPTEMBER, 2010
Cheers Paravrais, I've never noticed that the notes were off but now that I've taken a closer look I've seen it (and heard it) myself.
The track itself is in a real unfinished state, just got a writers block after the drop.
Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the feedback! In terms of your track,i liked it although, i think it would be nice if it dropped into a more funky garagey piece. Obviously you need to make what you enjoy, but the drums and bass sounded kinda generic. I'd say go back to just before the drop and make something new, but do whatever you enjoy! Make what you want to make and perhaps not what you think people want you to make. The track shows promiseCubicle wrote:
