Yesterday saw All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, which was pretty shit and The Orphanage (Spanish) which was fantastic - expertly directed, massively creepy and subtle and to top it all off emotionally resonant to an acute degree which you might not expect of a ghost/horror film.

So watch that but not the other one.

The girl in Mandy Lane is just beautiful though...

I have the Orphanage to watch, Del Tor executive produced it I think? I heard it was similar in atmosphere to Devil's Backbone

Watched Notebook over the weekend, that's pretty deep if you've had relatives like that.

Just watched Tropa de Elite (Elite Force), Brazilian film about BOPE, the anti drug dealer unit in Rio, they use some slightly forceful forms of persuasion and deal with drug dealers in a somewhat unforgiving manner.

Put bluntly they are fascist fucks, the movie doesn't really make any bones about that, but it's interesting to think how necessary an attitude like that is.

It's really well made, and is probably one of the most brilliant if indirect and maybe even unintended arguments in favour of legalisation of drugs.

It's weird watching a film in portuguese though, if you speak spanish you can understand bits, but they sound really strange because of the accent and pronunciation.

get. in. there. fucking incredible film. toooooooo many good lines. hope it doesn't get a whole 'lock, stock' kinda following and become cliched mind you, though it doesn't have the whole 'double 'ard bastards' themed usp so that probably won't happen.

Haven't seen Devil's Backbone, I'd like to though. I love ghost story films/books.

That girl is incredible, yes.

a revisit of Werner Herzog's "Heart of Glass". I really love that film, the mute is excellent symbolism to match all the hypnotized cast.

Plus, the opening sequence of the herdsman philosophizing/water&sky imagry is still among Herzog's best moments...

I have that lined up to watch, the same director also made the documentary Bus 174 which is excellent if you haven't seen it.
