@ Bad Boy Bastian “Scarlett Letter” – Chill track. Dig the break down @ 3min. The snare doesn’t seem to fit right in the mix…a little too loud. I like the left panned piano, but it would thicken the track up to have a mirror piano in the right when the verse breaks in. Great tune.

@ dwel “Suffering” – Dark. Creepy vocal samples. Only suggestion would be the snare…it sounds weird hitting dead in the center. Maybe split the sound, pan each just a little to the opposite side. Then it would hit hard. Sounds good.

@EDN “Stumble On” – Drums are nice and tight. The bass is too heavy from 1:07 to 1:12…it sounds like its overwhelming everything else. It seems just a little too loud for the rest of the track as well. I like the cello, but I wish it had more of a stereo sound to fill in the track from 1:38 to 2:45. The change in drum samples at the end was interesting. I liked it, but at the same time I feel like it was competing too much with the rest of the band. Overall, great track man, beautiful ideas here.

And here’s one I’ve been working on lately : “Beast”

@Cheeky, real bassline feel to it, like the key change, but the snares waaay at the back of the mix, you need to toughen it up/boost its volume. Also pan your percs just a little bit, it helps your bassline become the centre of attention without being annoying on headphone (100% panned percs do my head in on cans)

@nnny Dream love the piano/strings , the delay and reverb is real beautiful mayn and those samples come in perfectly. Your first sub note sounds two semis (keys on the keyboard) too high tho, and you need ever so slightly to boost your centre mids on your snare, else it'll sound like a crash on some tinnier speakers and iPod headphones. PM me when its done, I'm THAT into the sound of it! :D

@Bass Sedation, beautiful drop. Although you may need to vary up that intro a bit more, and no doubt you're going to slap a sub under that bass so I wont bother suggesting it! Love the open feel to the mix, but the midrange @ about 350 needs boosting on that screamy drill you got on the drop else it will sound thin on a system, and your kick needs a bit more thump around 100hz and again at 60. Massive potential tho, bet the automation was a bitch! Btw am I right in guessing you made this on either home speakers with no sub bass response or a reallly sub heavy system??

Here's mine, some a that purple s**t!

@gen_ Thank you so much, means a lot knowing someone other than I actually liked it :D
Tried fixing it according to what you said but not sure how its sounding. Hard for me to check on things like sub bass and the mid of them snares on a pair of headphones from poundland. Beats using laptop speakers! Haha, need to invest in something decent soon, if only I could find a job...

Liking you tune a lot man too, seriously nice little melody. Its catchy :D

Anyway.. Here she is:
Soundcloud

Anything else need addressed, or would you call it finished?
Quite proud, in the few months I've been producing, first track I've somewhat finished and been happy with :)

Really cant tll if the sub bass is fine, so let me know.

Thanks about the tune man, wasn't sure DSF would like it. :)

Yeah that subs still a little off, but if I want it to follow the melody I have in my head I always raise it an octave (12 w+b notes or 8 white ones) then draw the notes I know fit with the rest of the mix melodically then pull it back down 12 notes. I got big KRKs that throw out bottom end pretty well, but I know from playing out that clubs are can throw out a little lower than mine before they bottom out, so sometimes its hard to pith the bottom end I want at home when I know it'll sound good at the club. I reckon you can use the same idea to get around your head phone issue till you can actually hear the bottom end.

Is there any way that I can share a work in progress without making it public? If I make it private it sound cloud will you guys be able to listen or will it only be people who follow me on soundcloud?
Obviously I dont want people outside of here hearing a work in progress!

Not sure on that, cos I know if you make it private, you have to add by email, who follows you etc, who can listen to it.

Should be able to. Make it private with a secret link and widget enabled, then put the secret link into the widget like so

Thats one of my WIPs that I'm beaming to another producer. The question is, can you all hear and play it?

@ gen0, sniper DUBB, snif, nnny, – Thanks for the compliments, and yes, the drop took a few hours to hammer out. I’m still not entirely satisfied…I want it to “pop” right at the end, like something Dodge and Fuski might do, if you’re familiar. Also, thanks for all the good advice, definitely a boost at this point in the production! Also, there is sub bass in the tune. Most of it is 60hz and lower. So, to answer your question gen0, I used two devices to mix: Sennheiser hd280 headphones and my home stereo, that has a 12” powered sub. It can definitely bang out those deeeeep sub tones, but the meat of the bass is lost. The kick also sounds a little muddy on the home stereo, but clean in the ‘phones.

@gen0 – “Spaceman” – I like the synth bass mixed with the kick. Crunchy. I think the actual kick could be a little heavier , although I understand that it’s staying out of the sub’s way. It just needs a little more…punch. Sadly, I’m not as adept in technical talk to direct you to the specific adjustment needed. Love some 808 cowbell tho. Would like to hear the bass sustain for the whole bar at some point…maybe drop some of the percussion, sustain the bass and have a beat down section. Just an idea that popped into my head while listening. Smooth vibes here.

@sniperDUBB – “effin about” – I like the intro fx, but they fade away too soon. They should sustain through the first measure of the intro synth, to give some background motion to the intro. Nice, subtle drop. After the drop, I think the “intro” synth is just a little too loud, it’s competing with the vowel bass for space. Very chill, I wish the track was longer!

@snif – “42” – Likin the midrange synth. Dark vibes, wicked wobble. The delay on the synth before the drop was getting a little tiresome by :45, maybe add some flanger or automate a filter to give the track a little more motion before the drop. The highest pitched synth sounds a little thin. Try adding some distortion, or adding an octave below to thicken the sound up. Nice tune man, keep workin!

@nnny – “Dream In Oriental” – Really diggin the vibes, and the synth vibes! I didn’t hear the first version, but the sub sounds dead on in this version. Really filled the whole range, with plenty of space in the mix. The snare sounds a little flat and flam-y to me. Instead of making a nice, crisp “pop” and or “spank” or what have you, it sounds like a flam. The level is right, maybe just add a snare with a little more pop…no clue what frequency that might be. Really smooth track man.

I know the feeling. I used a pair of Microsoft XL3000 "LifeChat" USB headphones for the longest time. They were basically meant for skype. They sounded awful.

And for the new beat, I like it. It's headed in the right direction, just lengthen the intro and outro and you're done. Maybe an airy, swooshy synth noise with a high pass filter and a little phaser (right at the the end of the section) before the drums even start. I liked where it was going at 2:23, it sounds like the pitch bend might serve to set up a final, more intense section. Keep the bend going to the next octave, draw it out over a few beats, then drop a new drum part, faster or slower; maybe change the bass a bit, rinse and repeat, then finish with a drum fill and the same outro you have now. :D

But...that's just my idea...

Here is a new version, haven't had time to get around to making any drastic changes yet.
I do understand I need to work on hi hats, they're the same from my last tune. I only put them in as like a rough idea...

@Bass sedation: Nice track mate. Sound design is quite original. I'm definitely feeling this one. The intro could use some love maybe, as that drone carries on a bit longer than holds my interest, but when it starts coming on, I definitely started bobbing my head. The sub's a bit quiet in the mix, but overall, very nice.

@gen_: the second half of this track is BANGIN' bro. Nice nice work. Loving the melody. And yes, its definitely purple. Fucking dope hip hop feel to it... not a lot of negative feedback to give. Finish this, would ya?

@snif: its a bit atonal for my taste til it gets to the end, but the last quarter is nice. LIking the wobs that build in.

@nnny: the subs there man, I'm hearing it. This one's a bit deep for my taste. Just, not my thing.

Here's mine. Think I should've limited it a touch more on the master, but whatever. Tell me whatchu think of the mix though, and any other crit is more than welcome.
