I think the other thing about london is that if you don't live there, you may not know where the good free things are. I've noticed that friends that come down from London seem to spend inordinate amount of time in expensive bars and clubs when they could have found cheaper and more interesting places to hang out.
Hmm....

Hmmm, good to know. I'm going to be down there quite a bit in the next year (my grilf's just moved to Finsbury Park) and I'm piss poor (basically unemployed while finishing my PhD) so the that's good news.Shonky wrote:I think the other thing about london is that if you don't live there, you may not know where the good free things are. I get really pissed off with people who put up with poor to average stuff because they can't be arsed putting in the effort to find out about better stuff, eg people who go to the same overpriced chain restaurants / coffee shops / whatever for years when there's a nicer, cheaper, frendlier independent one down the road that they could have found out about by spending ten minutes (eg on the internet) reading reviews.

a) have no money to make the trip into the center where there are free attractions as transport costs in London are now so prohibitive
b) have no inclination to go to these free attractions as they would require you to have quite a lot of initiative to actually find out about them and have an interest - a lot of these kids are in such bad situations that this is largely an unreasonable expectation. Part of the problem is encouraging them to look beyond their immediate environment which is usually pretty bleak. There are obviously exceptions though.
I still have less sympathy for them than the kids living in a nasty high rise on the edge of Scunthorpe.
