Thought I might ask this in here instead of starting a thread. Was watching a tutorial video on mixdowns (it was a pretty pop dance track the guy was remixing, video from Groove3) and he was using the hard clipper in Logics bitcrusher to tame transient peaks on just about everything to gain head room. He was saying you can do the samething with a limiter but it was more work for essentially the same effect.

Was curious what people thought of this technique.

With a hard limiter, there's pumping due to the release stage. A clipper is time agnostic so it can be a bit more transparent in certain situations. Gotta be gentle with it though or else the audible distortion will far outweigh the lack of pumping. Works best on highly dynamic material with very short transients.

Cool man. Many thanks. It seemed like a decent idea in some situation. He mostly used it on drums and anything that had a transient peak. The way he was using it I couldnt really hear what he was doing. Ive been using the Fruity Soft Clipper dunno if I should be looking for a hard clipper. But pretty much just crank it to make it obvious then backing it off until I dont hear it working.

So hornt up for Bitwig. Releases the 28th.

I've been thinking all day about building my own sample and library. I want to separate composition and sound design into two separate processes. I'd need to be able to build a library of my own sonic palettes and group and sort them in various ways once I'm actually in a composition session. Was trying to figure out ways to organize the folder structure without it causing issues down the line. Too many nested folders and you have to click in and out of each one to audition sounds. Not enough nesting and you have 4 billion samples to scroll through till you find one that sounds good. I realize I need meta tagging capabilities so I can save them in a structure that makes sense and then just search by tag. Of course Ableton can't do this, but Bitwig can.

I'm ready to ditch Ableton like a drunk underage girl who can't get into the club you're going to. Now I don't really have to worry about being too organized with any sound design I do. I'll just go and retag all my sounds at the end of the month when Bitwig drops and live happily ever after.

Anyone else got their own vault of patches and samples? How do you organize things?

I've been thinking of having a "Dumping Grounds" folder as a sample inbox. Then having a Vault folder with various categories, each with a section for raw audio and layered samples I've made. I kind of want various levels of refinement, from a full drumkit full of layered samples, down to a thin snare top layer I can drop on top of something I've already got.

I really want to download and design some dirt and texture layers. Gonna do the standard convolution, vocoding, granulating of various field recordings. Anyone know of any other sources for texture?

Okay it might not be my top top favorite but it's up there. Can't give out all my sources, gotta retain some mystery like a poorly written wikipedia article.

Honestly I don't even use sample packs. I'm just starting my sample library as I mentioned above. I do like grabbing foley samples and field recordings though. Freesound type shit. If you're looking for ready to go stuff though I can't help you.

For live drums I usually use Superior Drummer. Or I'll layer various foley samples over filtered hip hop snares n shit.

Ooh, been looking for this pool ball type sound for ages, finally thought to youtube search for those magnetic ball bearings, ended up finding these weird chinese therapy balls.

Aw yiss, that clinking sound. Gonna get layered in tons of percussion.

I've never really tapped youtube for sound effects since I've just written it off due to poor quality. But for textural and foley sound type stuff you can find some gems. Between that and freesound, you can really nab some unique source material to manipulate.

I think I need to get me a Zoom portable recorder. The last few days I've been looking at things from a sampler point of view, flicking and scraping various objects. I'm gonna try to record some audio with my webcam. Even just random beatbox noises can be super valuable for processing other sounds with convolution and vocoding.

Bro, Zoom h4n is pretty amazing as an audio tool.

And I sample the f out of youtube. For crazy dialog, sounds, classic deep unavailable music.

Sampling off YouTube is more fun with the SP404 effects.

Everything is more fun with the 404 fx. :W:

Wub, you know any other devices that have fx like these? Or software that is kind of lofi like these fx. I've had a hard time quantifying what is so nice about the 404fx, so have had a hard time finding something similar. But there is a sound there. Lofi, but not generically, instead in a particular way.
