idk it had some pretty good scenes, but the silent thing didn't really work. and this is coming from a guy who's favorite movie is the good, the bad and the ugly.


i watched the sting from start til finish for the first time. what an incredible movie

i enjoyed it (i was watching it on a flight)...but idk. the lack of dialog from ryan gosling's character bugged me, especially closer to the first act of the movie.

the first scene was meant to set up Gosling's character tho, a Driver... kind of an empty vessel...having him say nothing in the entire film is pointless, he's not a mute

he's just quiet, like... THATS IT. he's just quiet.

George Clooney in The American - barely says anything. just builds guns and kills people and macks hookers. no one complained about that because he furrowed his eyebrows a lot.

Gosling got bare unnecessary stick for the way he played that role i think

exactly my thought; there was barely any dialogue in those first minutes, but that was one of the best getaway scenes i've seen in a movie... but then they kill it with the whole "minimal dialogue" thing cos the guy doesnt even speak properly

exactly my thought; there was barely any dialogue in those first minutes, but that was one of the best getaway scenes i've seen in a movie... but then they kill it with the whole "minimal dialogue" thing cos the guy doesnt even speak properly

thats literally all he does

he's a stunt driver/getaway driver... his whole character is literally that, the first chase scene has first person camera views of him driving - straight away his character is driving you through the film

the dialogue is cheesy, the way he dresses is WAY cheesy, his whole character is cheesy - a mechanic who says little but lets his fists do the talking(!): the whole film is ridiculous and over the top whilst pretending to be subtle

its way pretentious and artsy whilst at the same time being over the top and cheesy... his character has moments of over the top sentimentality followed by horrifically violent outbursts

its a play on the classic american hero to me, the strong silent type who has a soft side but hides it and is capable of obscene, sociopathic violence

its the same story the Soprano's ripped the piss out of with Tony's love of Gary Cooper and his fascination with cute little ducks, whilst at the same time he can order the death of his friends and curb-stomp a guy to within an inch of his life (i mean they actually recreated that scene in Drive! the parallels are plenty)

like, im almost verging on believing that Drive kind of mocks the soprano's if you take that view of it, but it could equally reinforce it - minus the implied morality

also the guy who directed it has a kind of fascination with revealing a characters humanity through their relationship with kids... like how the manliest of men either find strength or their demise through a child... in this case its the latter

i duno, its one of them where i could try and explain why i think its good, but i also know loads of reasons why people would hate it and its not cos they 'dont get it' which is bullshit, its just one of them films... but i do think it helps to not take it so literally. its not really a film about cars...

I guess not taking it soo literally might help in this case. Still, I think I will always prefer the American to this. Clooney can pull off the whole quiet persona thing quite well imo. And that female sniper is well fit

I don't have a problem Gosling, his acting was awesome.

I'm saying when stuff happened, like plot and that, I lost interest. I prefer Nicolas Winding Refn's style when he favours mood over plot, like Valhalla Rising. First act stretched to a whole film= awesome

I don't see how some random redemption/revenge plotline is any less pointless than an awesome mood piece about a driver going around with mint music being fucking cool chewing on a toothpick

Refn said himself before the film came out that he thought about the film being a guy dressed like the film scorpio rising, driving around listening to soft rock at night

this plot= awesome, completely not pointless. deep ambience and mood with layered emotional attachments derived from the various elements missing from most of the finished film
