yeah I highly recommend all Reason users to put each instrument into labeled combis. I also name any synths Im using purely as a modulation source eg. using a subtracters lfo, so that if I then add automation its track lane will be labeled.
Just trying to understand this process a little better cus my rack setup is diabolical at times as i tend to be quite skittish when i work, and after a while i don't know what i'm looking at any more. I would welcome a tidy rack!
So what are the advantages of sticking each instrument in a combi? Would you include all effects in that combi too?

YES!!! First create a combi. Then stuff it with whatever you need. Say a subtractor. Then under subtractor create a scream. Then a a reverb. And all this can be closed up when ur done tweakin it. So the key is to create a combi first. Then create what u need inside the combi. And label everyting.
You can also combine intruments and fx afterwards. To do this, you need select all the devices you wanna put in a combi, right mouse click and select combine

U can also use combinators to save FX chains, rather than full instruments. These can then be used as inserts or sends for more complicated FX.

thought I would try and revive this thread and post an interesting technique, turning audio into cv signals using Thor. Route the sound you want to use as the CV into the Thor audio inputs. Then in the matrix, send the audio inputs you have used to the CV output(s). The CV signal reacts to the volume of the audio so if you route it to one of the rotaries on a combinator and used the combi programmer to send it to various paramters of a patch some very interesting sounds can probably be achieved.
