Ive had a nice read through all this, your tracks are ill man! I wanna be cool like you one day!

My question for you is : Did you ever get a peice of hardware that motivated you to work harder? That leads me to the the next, What would you say is the most important peice of hardware to keep in a studio? And also if its not too much trouble can you list what you own in the order which you think is the most to least important for you?

Stay up man thanks for being an idol!

Thx for your answers ! I got a new question : At the end of Otacon (at 6:10) there is some kind of atmosphere sound, like a hipassed reese or something, how did you that sound ? i love these little fx during atmospheric parts :z:

Sweet thread and props for all the answers!

With Technetium did you set out to make a beat that, erm, popped(?) so much or just sumble upon it? How much of your stuff is blind experimentation and how much is planned sound?- I just sit in my chair bouncing up and down to that tune lol

how did you get to this point? were you previously unemployed and just had the time to produce? or did you decide to leave your job once you reached a point where you knew your tunes would require all of your effort/energy?

what kind of stuff do you listen to when you're not producing? who are some of your favorite artists?
I was lucky and had my first release before i'd left Uni, i basically spent 3 years making tunes nonstop. Then had a part time job at Zaudio so still had time for making tunes. I then weasled back to my dad's flat for about 8 months to just concentrate on making some music and save some money, luckily by the time i moved back to london i had enough gigs to live off.
That's it really, the money i make from putting out tunes is nothing compared to the money from DJing, that's what pays my bills.

Maaan, i listen to all sorts, jazz, funk, ambient, techno, DnB, metal, shoegaze. Basically anything that's made from a desire to make music rather than something manufactured to make money.

hahahahaha i really couldn't give a shit, how people wanna describe my music is up to them.
Youtube is it's own weird little universe that doesn't translate to the real world, Mt eden has proved this.

How much of your sounds come from random samples, i.e. stuff you've recorded yourself etc, rather than sample packs?

do you record much percussion stuff live? like on the thing you did with starkey for MAH?

how much out of your day goes into music, was it the same when you weren't making your living from it? (not really sure if I want to hear this :P)
Some of it comes from stuff i've recorded myself, the drums and hats in hyperglide are a sample pack i recorded myself from my own drumkit.
Annoyingly, all my drums and percussion are in storage at the moment so haven't recorded much new for a while although i do lob in the odd shaker or tambourine here n there lol.

At the moment pretty much all day everyday goes into music, making tunes etc then i DJ at the weekend. Can be a bit much sometimes so it's all about bullshit missions into central london to buy some shoelaces/paperclips/socks as an excuse to get out the house.

how do you feel about people illegally downloading your music? especially as you've sad yourself that you make your money mostly from shows rather then tunes, and if people ilegally downloading and sharing your music makes you more popular and get your more shows and therefore more money that way would it not therefore be a positive thing for you?

Since you us so many incidentals and different sounds how do you best preview or find which ones to use in the context of your song? Also how do you go about organizing all your samples and one shots?

mmjdw wrote:Good drum tips... already used a couple but resampling the kick seems very useful.

Anything for bass? I've barely got started with resampling and was wondering how a typical bassline would be arranged, step by step? For instance in otacon, where it starts off wobbling and then is just like WOHTBBOHE (or something like that.)

Also do you use presets a lot (especially pads).
The otacon bassline is really about 6 or 7 different sounds played in order. I then went through and varied up what it does note wise and also with what the filters are doing. A lot of my basslines are really just lots of different sounds played one after the other.
I can't really explain how to do it, i'd have to show you.

i use the odd preset for pads n things, but i generally tweak them to make it different from the original preset.
Sometimes i make my own pads. There's nothing wrong with presets for pads really if it's not the "point" of your tune.

gkmusic wrote:man, your remix of mike lemmon's brass eye and hyperglide have to be two of my most fav tracks up to date, seriously big up!

for my question i would like to ask;

1. how do you go about making a weighty sub like the one in the brass eye remix?

also

2. what advice would you give to 'up and coming' artists who want to reach the the point you are career-wise?

again. thanks for taking time out to answer these questions reso, really appreciate it! :D
1. 808's bwoy! There's basically no midrange in that tune so i boosted the sub and made it weighty as fuck. I used the esx24 sampler and turned the drive up by about 2-3% which gave the sub more character.

2. try to be original, i cant teach you this. Also it really is down to pot luck, being in the right place at the right time, knowing the right people etc. If you're good people will notice. Look at joy orbison, he got the right people behind him and went from obscurity to massive in 6 months.

sofa_king wrote:this is one of the best threads I have ever read. thanks to Reso for this it would be great if more producers did this - not to copy their style or anything but seeing screenshots of a pro's monitor is just really interesting. while we're naming tunes, I love the remix of Grand Puba - Get It.

my only question - do you ever blaze the ganja when you maketh the tunes? Is it helpful at any point in the process?
:D thanks chap.
i used to blaze like a bastard, not really anymore. I found i'd just sit there listening to a pad for about 4 hours never really deciding on some chords, plus computers become this impossibly baffling ordeal when i'm lean.
It's nice to have a blaze when i think a tune is finished just to get a new perspective and have a fiddle about, icing on the cake stylee.

I don't have any hardware, just my mac n logic. Just trying to make fucked up new sounds and the limitless possibilities of synthesis keep me going.
Not very helpful sorry :7:

haha that beat was very deliberate, i went out of my way to un-quantise it and make it sound fucked up.

It's probably about 50-50 with planned to experiment. sometimes i know what i want and just make the sound other times i'm just pissing around when you hit a sound and think "shit the bed that's sick!"

you said it, it is a positive thing, don't get me wrong, if you can afford to pay for music then you should, but we've all been totally skint so i'd prefer someone to have my music and love it than not. The way the industry works is changing, we just gotta accept it really. (I'm not condoning you robbing my tunes by the way you pikey bastards!! :D )

I use the media preview box in logic, and have a load of fx folders that are from sample cd's and ones which i've made myself. Generally i leave these sounds as audio or might load a whole bunch into an esx24.
There really isn't a quick way of doing it though, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.
