I must say I only recently stumbled upon this music. Downloaded Sek's set thinking...hmm, dubstep, what ever that is. Variety is good, give it a go. HOOKED. within the first two min. of it, I knew it. I will listen to pretty much anything, but it takes a lot for my jaw to drop. I hadnt been this into a sound since d'n'b/jungle a decade ago. Hadnt been guying up vinyl much in the last year or two, hadnt been all that excited about going out to a night in a number of years, save a few special nights. Thats all changed.
I think variety is key. Would never say I have gotten out of d'n'd/jungle, still spin a bit of everything from dub/downtempo to house to d'n'b. But it certainly is nice to have found a FRESH new sound.
It doesnt matter when or how people find something, I know some people who are just now giving electronic music in general a chance. and thats wicked. no jadedness about "oh well, you should have been there when this or that was going on". Its where their intentions are, if it is genuine, or if it is image.
I certainly am greatful for the new sounds, but having said that, i hope that i continue to find something different everytime i am beginnig to get a little "ho hum" about things.
Having said all that, I think its sorta funny that people state that d'n'b lost its vibe/soul what have you in the last year or two. Its all relative to what you are looking for, listening for. I started feeling that way back around 98 or so, and actually think things have gotten somewhat better. A nice bouncy vibe has come back, so new ragga licks and such. Not all restricted to dark, hard tek. There is soo much music being produced, that to say something has lost its soul is kinda outlandish......there are still people producing tunes that if you had to categorize them, they would fall into "'95 ragga jungle" style, but they are 2005 release.
The scenes are always changing, its just a question of finding a nice little back-eddy in the raging masses that provides you with what you are looking for.
wha, tangent!
peace
