hopefully soon i want to see some dj's start using controllers and have elaborate live setups to keep things interesting. i think dubstep dj's should take a page out of the european techno scene and STEP SHIT UP

Admittedly clubs are notoriously bad at looking after decks, we went to play in Reading and when they got the decks out of the cupboard a tone arm was completely snapped in half, luckly I'd brought a few CDs so could still do the set (they had 9 CDJ 1000s in that venue and only one working turntable) and one I've had to DJ with one deck & serato internally on the other deck, skippy needles, wobbly tables, fucked up mixers, monitors the list goes on

BUT the promoter should be checking that the set up is good enough for DJs such as Youngsta to come and play, I know I certainly do, any problems I'll sort waaay before the night begins, if it means going home to pick up the turntables, it should be done. Why pay out for DJs & let your punters pay out for them too, to then do a half arsed job of setting up?!? Madness..

On another note, the more DJs put up with the fact that the decks are faulty and just hop on the CDJs the worst its gonna get. Out to Plastician, Youngsta and the like, next time your Technics are inadequate kick up a right stink and let 'em know that its unacceptable .

BTW, unless I KNOW the venue, I'm rolling with spare needles, vinyl, serato, audio cds, mp3 cds, laptop and more recently, blue-tac for dodgy tone arms.

Yes although I use cool edit and hard limit a few db off the peak volumes (and removed any pops etc) so the volumes are closer to digital and there's a bit less gain tweaking. The better quality soundcard you use to record the vinyl the better quality the WAV will be but any decent card around £100-150 will do the job fine.

Not wholly relevant but Pinch's recent FACT mix was exclusively vinyl. Not the same kudos as Youngsta but still a major part of the scene using vinyl

prefer to see a dj do his/her/their thing (unless you have lighting like daft punk have to go with your "live" show)

Take it from me, its nothing to do with money.

Clubs aren't looking after their decks, and with sound systems getting ever louder, they are becoming a nightmare to work with.

I too have conceded that I'm probably going to have to stop using the Serato vinyl and switch to Serato CD's soon. Skipping needles, people jumping near the DJ booths and loads of other factors make it nearly impossible to play an hour set without some kind of hindrance to your set.

Its definitely more about this than money I think.

Hey, here's a piece of good news: for the last 2 years, more records have been sold in greater numbers every year while CD sales figures are dropping dramatically. I believe the invisible hand of the market will intervene and people will begin to realize in greater numbers each year the market value of records. People pronounced records to be dead 25 years ago,yet certain genres kept the format alive which led to a revival and is now a profitable enterprise once again.

It's really all a slippery slope. I feel that the clubs won't necessarily make it more geared to mp3s simply because the closer you integrate with mp3s, the less need there is for an actual DJ. You might as well just be playing mixes or satellite radio. People will pay to hear a live DJ, the game has to adapt and most likely will.

I don't know where you got your figures from but vinyl sales are not on the increase unless you include the sales of serato and traktor control vinyl - you take those two out of the equation and that takes away something like half of all vinyl sales globally in the last 5 years. This is true.

I read that vinyl sales had gone up, but when i looked into it, the spike was due to the indie kids buying 7" not more people buying "Dance" music.

@HRKRT - Sakura I think? Japenese theme, three floors, Nero played but I thought the DJ after them was loads better.
As for ripping vinyl, I don't bother, an all digital set will be very different from a serato/all vinyl set from me. I'm gonna stress this point again, PROMOTERS need to sort it, not just the clubs....

I don't think this is the case mate, the clip I saw of him playing they weren't brand new dubs (even when it was recorded)

It's gotta be to do with money, think how much money he'll save a year lol

well yeah i guess it's the condition of the needles and stuff... cos in manchester the other day he was using 80% vinyl... im guessing the times he was using CDs was for brand new tracks. ive seen loads of videos of him using CDJs and im not arsed... times are changing...

it takes the same amount of skill to mix CD's as it does with vinyl. I actually find it more difficult with CD's

for one the pitch doesn't waver at all - once it's locked it's locked - you don't have to keep nudging it.

It all depends on what you are used to

On a good setup i can lock a mix on vinyl comfortably in 15/20 secs whereas on cd decks its probably more like 30 - 45

i know that i can smash up a venue better when there are 2 working technics in the venue
