on the other hand...to look at it a lil different, if mans wanna believe that half-time is some sort of rule of dubstep, that's their business.

doesn't affect my perception of the sound whatsoever.

Ive just read through this entire thread and 'lol' to most of it and that comment above has to just bang the nail on the head for the whole restriction thing lol big man.. but will someone please tell the person asking about guitar use in dubstep what is the best way of putting the actual sound of him playing the guitar onto a DAW, information like this would help him... and me as my friend wants to link his guitar to my tracks lol

If I understand correctly, Modestep is a band of a drummer, singer, and guitarist, and they just process their real instruments to sound synthy. idk though, I'm just going by music videos.

You can do it all via MIDI, that's how I've done it in the past. A lot of film composers work that way for scoring films, but in reverse. Write it all on synths/DAW and someone transcribes the MIDI to sheet music for an orchestra.

I say do whatever the hell you want. I use the kick on 1 and snares on 3 pattern @140bpm to start my beats then do whatever pops into my head. I only do it that way cause I find it easier to fill in a beat first, then subtract later

I have checked out Rusko, Skrillex, Skream, Datisk, Flux Pavillon, and Mt Eden just to get an Idea of what dubstep is, and the only consistent I have found is that there isn't one. And don't let the "brostep" haters deter you. Do what makes you smile and you are doing good.

As I understand it the origin of dubstep is mixing reggae dub, which is where the bass comes from, with slower, 2step beats. Now I think it's more of a feel to the overall track than a set of rules you have to follow. Like any form of electronica.

I have always like Pink Floyd, and 70's Funk so I tend to work with a focus on somewhat psychedelic grooves. Not as dynamic, just stuff that's fun to bob to. I would like to work with a guitar player actually. A funk guitar player, and someone that can play stand-up bass.

The work in progress in my sig has guitar and is at 140bpm and has a prominent sub bassline, so I guess you could say it's dubstep?

Thanks, always on the look out for more inspiration. Well, at least for ways to shore up my weaknesses.

I listened to Rusko's Woo Boost about 20 times trying to figure out why it moved so much better than my tracks. I finally figured out that it was the FX and other stuff in the background. Since then I've been adding in a lot more greeble and things are sounding much better.

yeah I recently noticed that if you take the individual parts of Woo Boost out (such as a lot of the higher register synths), they sound really weird and off, at least when isolated. But together they sound pretty cool

The reason I like Rusko more than anyone else right now is probably cause I learned a lot watching that masterclass video of his that is floating around. The fact that he is using Acid helped me see ways of doing things that watching abelton or other DAW videos didn't. He also has a similar way of building tracks to the way I do it. My style is still way darker, but he sure helped my methodology.

my favorite masterclass would have to be Kryptic Minds. I don't even use Ableton, but I'm a huge fan of their tunes and it was really helpful. A close runner-up is Subscape, because he uses logic just like me and I like a lot of his tunes.
My problem with the Rusko masterclass was simply that I couldn't see the screen well enough, the resolution was pretty bad

Can't argue with that. I probably got by with it because I know Acid, so I could tell what he was doing even when I couldn't really see it well.

Thanks for mentioning those other classes, I found a youtube channel with those, plus a bunch of others. I will have to watch them later.
