I can't watch Akira anymore without being reminded of the hours I spent working on this video:

Well, I'm entitled to my opinion, and it's one I've held since the 80s. I also think a lot of other stuff is crap that other people think is great. The reverse is also true.alphacat wrote:I would politely disagree, actually. When I first saw it in 1989 it was starkly different from even the 'dark' Anime out there in both its scope & style, both of which have more to do with reality than most of the genre. My point is that the 'overhype' is due to idiot J-fetishist dorks who used to hold it over other peoples' heads that they'd even seen it before it was widely known.kay wrote:Not that I particularly cared much about Akira one way or other anyway. Overhyped.
First off - the English language dub takes a lot away from the original, which is (like most foreign language films) best watched in the native dialect it was filmed in. The English voice characterizations are cookie-cutter Anime "cute teen" voices, but in Japanese the thugs actually sound like thugs.
Secondly, it's talking about some really profound/heavy philosophical shit (much like some of my other favorite movies, 2001, Blade Runner, etc.) that you have to work a little to uncover. It's a mindblower when you really get dialed in...
Thirdly, it's a masterpiece of cinematography/photography by any standard - but for an animated movie - and a traditional cel animation movie, at that - it's an unbelievable achievement.
Finally, it's part of 20th century Japanese cinema's grand obsession with apocalyptic/cataclysmic themes... and much more current than, say, Godzilla (which also came out of that tradition.)
AND-
Let's not forget the soundtrack... this shit came out in the EIGHTIES and doesn't sound dated in the least.
With Akira, perhaps it's just that I grew up with Japanese cartoons, before I'd ever heard of them referred to as anime. So I have always been exposed to exceedingly fluid cel animations. I look at frothing J-fetishists with disdain because, well, they didn't even grow up in the culture. I suppose my lack of appreciation for Akira could also be because the subject matter simply does not interest me.
Post-apocalyptic biker shit? Pah!
Having said that, it has probably been 20 years since I last watched it so it might be time to give it another go.
