Whys everything on here so technical

I have to agree with Abz about it not seeming technical enough around here... Really, I would do backflips to find some truely technical conversations going on on this forum, its so hard to come here and have to sort through all the stupid, philosophical, circular discussion that doesnt help anyone to find a bit of production conversation... And its not even the fact of the philosophical questions, but that its the SAME philosophical questions EVERY day from the SAME people. "What inspires you" "What motivates you too keep producing" is all anyone seems to talk about here, they grow to 20 pages of replies, and then the same people remake the thread.

well, since I was young, I always wanted to make visuals move to music. in the 90's I had a public access TV show where I would record winamp visuals going to my original music, all edited with Adobe Premiere. in 2004 I purchased Resolume and Sony Vegas and began making some wild videos and vj'ing out in clubs a bit. then.. m,y house was broken into and my gear was stolen.

that is when I got back into producing and kinda became FSTZ, DJ producer.. but inside me, there has always been a visual artist, yearning to get out. so I have recently been acquiring more cameras, Adobe Premiere CS4 and this is what I have come up with.

the concept is to take three songs off of my label, mix them together and then edit computer generated graphics on top of them.

what you are seeing is over 15 years in the making. all original music from my label with license free space graphics.

It just frustrating, it seems like this whole genre consists of getting perfectly engineered track and no on really seems to want to be an artist, just someone who constructs beats and it doesn't go any further than that. I really couldn't give a damn about how to use effects or make sounds. I thought it'll be nice to see if people actually care about what they write not care about what they've wrote sounds like. Yet only a couple of people seem like this and I guess i'll stop posting so much and just mod.

I really couldn't give a damn about how to use effects or make sounds.

I may just be speaking for myself, but the exact reason I am here is to learn how to use effects, and how to make sounds. I can discuss the inspiration for my music, and whether or not it sounds good, is worthwhile, etc with my regular friends.
The production side of things, none of them give a damn about or know anything about. I need places like this for that type of discussion.

And while i agree with the article you posted, about how "everyone's doing it", and countless bedroom producers are saturating genres with uninspired, meaningless output.....
I already like my tunes, and they are inspired. I hear music buzzing in my head all the time. I need to learn more about using effects and making sounds, so that I can record it properly.

made me actually sit & think. doesn't happen much on forums.


i think this is part of the reason why i like fgf (been a bit of a dead place for a while now though, so here i am) . they basically refuse to have a production forum. in some way or another it's gonna breed sameness. let people build what they think the fg (whether or not you like the term is irrelevant) should sound like.

i mean, is learning the basics of your daw really that hard? it comes with a manual. same with other sound design. did the upper level dubstep artists have forums to rush to whenever they wanted they wanted to recreate certain sounds? no they didnt (at least...i assume so lol). i find it shocking when you have big ass blank canvas, capable of making possibly an infinite amount of sounds, but yet heads want to recreate one sound 500 000 times over. yeah some may argue 'this is the sound which single handedly sparked my interest in dubstep & a particular artist and i stand in amazement of them because of that single sound, and rather than waste time fiddling around you can just get the sound from the get-go and start writing the tune'....but that attitude right there is what two oh one on 111 sort of addresses. the sameness syndrome. rush to finish the tune and upload to soundcloud so other people can say "filthy" "the drop is dooopppppppppe" "320?" "i like the snare" "i like the wobble, i made a similar bassline but tweaked the comb filter slightly (if that even makes sense)"

Yeah, that article was pretty accurate. I think most of the problem stems from a real lack of music appreciation. If more people would just listen to music outside of dubstep, or electronic altogether, I'm sure they'd begin to appreciate music for what it is. I mean this must be the only genre where being experimental means you use theory and chord progression.

I think that a lot of what's said their could be fired back at him. Like anyone can publish writing on the internet now, and most of it is just a sea of forgettable worthless shit.

What he said, about song structure is a fucking joke. Saying people don't know how to write music, their is no wronge, or right, just popular opinion. He is tring to stand for something different, but he is on about using using song structure that pre-date the loop based music.

The reason why those threads are so similar is cause if anything got to envolved the forum would implode on itself, I was easing people into it.

I come from a world where everyone is open about the reasons why they do what they do, what it means to them and such and such, you don't ask an painter to explain how they did each and every one of their brush strokes and what they did to mix their colours. Why is it that music is the only art where people are obsessed with how to do things!? Its absolutely boring.

Boy this thread went weird lol. Don't even know what to think. I will say this. It's not good to overthink what you are doing IMO. These threads lend to that more than the technical stuff.

Legend you were saying something that makes sense to me in a way. Personally I developed my own style by not having any of these resources. No message board. No YouTube. Whatever, just kinda poke around until I get what I want. Sometimes doing things that are backwards but it allows you to have a unique mindset. Even now, always learning but I still learn on my own. I typically skip the how to threads. I don't want to conform. But it's not to suggest that's the route for everyone. My skills only go so far at times. I may not have as many chops as some others.

I understand your point and agree, although if you look on art forums I think you'll find it can get pretty tech too.

I say continue posting fella. Forget getting defensive when you can lead by example and start posting inspiring posts for producers to vibe off!
