:?

how would you duck a kick drum?
lol sorry to be a jerk just sayin, a sound needs to have some sustain to it to make it "duckable" -- therefore the answer would be

give an example of a bubble riser?
you're not gonna find a 45 page manual on it, when risers are a simple case of

sustained note/pitch bend/filter automation.

soo simple.

My english teacher gave me a weird look when I mentioned that as the musical instrument I played. Like the wtf stare. I had to give her the 'wiki wiki' dj motion to confirm what i meant.

http://www.soundcloud.com/dubwired i think it can be used alone effectively, but i find it limits what i can produce

Reason isn't limiting as such. It just takes a LOT of extra work to get to where you want to be.

I believe Kode9 uses Reason too. But he also uses hardware synths so he must have some audio recording program too

Yeah, Malstrom has a really unique sound. He talks about how to make a bunch of his basses in the Q&A he did here.

Reason is a DAW on its own. probably better for some with the inclusion of Record. Record is optional and I like that because I don't need it. I like the fact it's not geared towards the audio tracking side of producing...fewer menus and other red tape. To get around the audio engine and mastering tools being questionable I sometimes export the audio for every instrument separately and mix that in Sonar. For a quick master I'll export to soundforge and have a play there. I'm considering sending some instruments through some outboard gear, now that I have a puter capable of playing and recording lol

Here's my favourite trick anyway:

Create a delay on the master mixer, as a send and return effect. Pan it all the way to the left. Switch the delay time down to about 10ms and turn the feedback right down.

On the return section of the mixer, turn the delay return down to about 63-64. Change this later if the sound isn't central.

Decide which instrument to use for this (best not the sub!) and turn the appropriate send all the way up on that channel and pan it hard right. Turn the volume down by 50% of it's original value.

Stick some headphones on to really get what's going on there. I tend to put some instruments through this kind of channel to allow an extra environment if it's a real busy mix - whatever is sent through this delay has the psycho-acoustic effect of being somewhere else in the room....type thing :s
