'dungeon' sound is imho often overcompressed...

most don't... it's just a made up name for an exact slice of dubstep, kind of like in 06 when everyone was obsessed with reggae samples, except we didn't have to make up another name then

A lot of DJs are just sleeping on big up and coming producers. Killa, Instict, Thelem, Coleco, Collision, DCult, Commodo, Fused Forces, Biome, and tons more producers are killing it right now. While I love, love, love dark minimal steppers, I do agree an entire set of JUST dark, minimal steppers gets a bit boring. While I mainly stick to the 'dungeon' sound, I will almost always play some 140 jungle, 2-step/garage, couple bangers (Coki, Jakes), some stone-cold classics (Skeng, Request Line ect.) and whatever the hell else I feel like playing when I am behind the decks. But I can successively move through these different genre/sub-genres at ease without losing a cohesive, dark feel to my set. And most of my favorite 'dungeon' producers are far more versatile than labeling them as such makes them out to be. DJ Madd can produce on whatever tip he feels like, and its pure quality each n every. Matt U makes some dungeonesque tunes, but more of his tunes are full 140 percussive tour de forces, not minimal or half-time in the slightest. Lastly bare 'dungeon' producers simply are sitting on piles of tuff dubplates, that haven't gotten released yet. Most of the best stuff I have heard from Biome and Lurka isn't even out yet.

What's wrong with that though?

Some of it won't get released in the traditional sense - there's no real money in only producing anyway, so it's served its purpose by being included in mixes - DJ says thank you very much and (sometimes) gets paid for the entertainment they've provided. Nothing wrong with that I guess. Some people do seem to value mixes more than individual songs though... personally I don't get that, unless you are actually there on the night.

Did I say there was something wrong with that? I think it is a great thing actually. I hope some of those amazing tunes never get released at all, and it helps keep dubplate culture alive. What I meant by my comment, is that if Biome has 40 amazing tunes, and only 3 of them are currently released (pulling numbers out my ass), then when Biome blows up, which I personally believe he is/has atm, then what 3 Biome tunes do you think you are going to see over and over again in mixes? There may have been a lack of output of quality content in this style recently, but I definitely see that it is picking up speed. Just my 2cents.

There's a shitload of dungeon for lack of better name from less well known producers that deserve a mention.

More liquidy though, if that's the right term, I'll find the links now

top one reminds me of the subdivision, used to love that sorta stuff.
lower one instantly made me think of kryptic minds & youngsta - surge. and by instantly i really mean instantly.

@topic: i think the only reason "dungeon" got a subgenre name in the first place was because to everyone the term dubstep equals brostep.

Haters gonna hate. It's just a few songs that sound similar and veer away from constantly chopping and changing synths every bar with crazy robot sounds.

Some of it's good, some of it ain't.

im gradually listening to less 'dance' music from the uk. It's losing its creatvitiy for me it seems like every other couple of months there is a new bandwagon dungeon seems to be becoming uncool and now everyone likes house.

I think its because everyone gets locked into tempos and repeating a certain sound IMO the 808 cowbell is turing into the next yoi you cant get away from them.

People try to list what makes dubstep what it is and if its not 140 and doesn't have a 40hz sub so heavy that your ribs turn to dust then its not dubstep, thats BS if you ask me. Burial has a load of songs at 90-100 and yet pretty much everyone considers everything burial does to be 'dub in it's purest form'.

I guess you need a consistent tempo to mix the tunes, but having everything at 140 gets boring especially on an album. I swear a whole load of producers now just have a checklist for what they put in every tune.
