The issue here is that you're calling something dubstep when it simply isn't dubstep. This is not up for debate, it isn't a matter of opinion. The song isn't even necessarily a bad song, its just not dubstep and shouldn't be advertised as such.
Already covered. I realise the lack of accuracy regarding genres but most (outside of these forums) believe it is dubstep thanks to mainstream media and, call me a sheep, but I decided to go with the flow so that they ("electro house" enthusiasts) can find me. Does that not justify what I am doing? Also, you might not have a problem with my musical tastes and be open minded (and props, I respect this) but many here DO so stop sticking up for them if you don't believe in it. They get rude and have zero tolerance for petty ignorances regarding "fine details" of the dubstep genre which they are overly sensitive about. It just as well be a case of "you weren't listening to our genre back in the early 2000's so get off our forum". Prior to coming here this is the full extent of my background:
1. I find skrillex and some other artists on YouTube
2. I saw "dubstep" all over their tags
3. I decide to put the songs in guitar hero
4. I went to a "dubstep" forum to advertise my work
5. I get loads of shit
At what point was I required to wikipedia/do extensive research on music genres in order to anticipate this reaction?
Maccaveli wrote:And as for assuming that everyone here hates in-your-face tunes, I think you'll find a lot of love for this tune on DSF:
Not much subtlety there, just plenty of face-melting. Us 'arrogant, closed-minded, bitter, over-protective hipsters' still love it though. You tell us to stop looking at things in black and white, but that's exactly what you're doing.
I went off on a tangent there. I mean't to explain my appreciation for music people kept telling me was "shit" in an attempt to come across as someone more educated than "I like the robot noises and loud bass" or whatever. (remember what you said about how it's no ones place to tell me what to like? does judging people based on what they like not go hand in hand with this?). I did not mean to say that in an assumptive context. Looking back at it now I can see the hypocrisy and I am sorry for that. What doesn't change though is the fact that certain terms/artists are forbidden on these forums,
based on a lack of open mindedness and a zero tolerance policy for "ignorant" people like myself (who no doubt sign up on the forums every 10 minutes.)
Maccaveli wrote:So basically, the issue here is not that you like brostep. Like what you want, its no one's place to tell you you can't. But that tune isn't dubstep, and it never will be. This isn't arrogant at all, its just a case of refusing to stand for ignorance. If you can't understand what I've just told you (for the third time), then I just... nup, I give up. Its not me its you.
"This isn't arrogant at all, its just a case of refusing to stand for ignorance" I agree completely. But what about the barrage of "face palms" and the like I received from other members you are standing up for? What about the amount of people who keep saying "the mainstream shit you listen to" in 10,000 iterations? That doesn't come across as anything but arrogant to me.
"that tune isn't dubstep, and it never will be" well check out "dubstep guns" video on YouTube. That is one of the main tracks featured in the video which currently has over 4 million views. The producers of the track (Klaypex) advertise their music as dubstep. I also understand that they advertised their own productions on these forums only to find themselves in the same argument I'm in. From my perspective it just seems like a few "dubstep" fans from it's underground days fighting with millions of electro house fans who like to call their music "dubstep" as well. Hell, dubstep rolls off the tongue a lot better than "electro house" it was always going to catch on better. I wish I could come up with another case study where something like this has happened.
Metaphorically speaking:
a small town invent a special coating for chicken and call it Kentucky Fried Chicken. It never gets out there but the town people love it. Several years on Colonel Sanders takes the recipe, adds his mix of herbs and spices to make it 1000 times more popular. He keeps the name Kentucky Fried Chicken and becomes famous. The town people get angry, with good reason too, but fuck all can be done about it that bastard with the moustache is worshipped all around the world. (Substitute Colonel Sanders for Skrillex and substitute chicken for, um... music)
