Every bit of treatment a parent gives their child is part of its education. Magic a car from nowhere and they'll be disappointed for the rest of their lives when they realise how hard you have to work to earn that much cash... rich parents spoiling their kids only creates lazy brats or 'rebellious' yet equally lazy trustafarians.

My ex's parents bought her and her sister cars... nothing on the Range Rover scale, but probably £7-8k's worth each. My lady was fairly decent about hers, but the sister was incredible... 6 months after being given a brand new hatchback she decides it's not good enough... Christmas has to mean trading the hatchback in for a Renault Coupe... 6 months later that had to go for Mini Cooper, a year after that she "had to" make them trade in for a BMW 3 series coupe. Clever girl came out of school with no A Levels and no idea what sort of job she wanted... she's 27 now, unhappily married with a kid after a ridiculously fancy wedding and splitting her time between nagging Dad and Hubby to buy her whatever she's just seen in Marie Claire... she'll spend her whole life trying to gain self-worth by getting people to buy her things and never realising why she hates what stares back in the mirror.

Oh, and her kid will most likely end up the same. :(

no I actually think your parents are probably extremely boring, self righteous hacktivists and you take after them. wouldn't expect you to find that funny.

I wish I'd been blessed with your imagination instead of my responsible parents. Amazing posting today, dude... what a life you lead! :Q:

the most worrying thing is that a lot of those people look way too old to be throwing any kind of hissy fit like that. shameful. i got 4 christmas presents this year, 3 of which were from primark. i dont really care, i know my family dont have much money so it's nice that i got stuff that i needed. but to cry for 2 hours because your parents didnt get you one of the most expensive pieces of kit on the market is just embarassing and shameful. fuck people like that seriously

I feel like you're kinda contradicting yourself here. One of them (your ex) is given an obviously nice vehicle, and acts appropriately humble, while the other proceeds to act like a spoilt bitch.

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that the two were probably raised in a similar fashion, and they still turned out quite different. Now, does this say that parental treatment and in some cases, indulgence determines a child's value-system?

Probably not.

Nah, just today he was being his usual belligerent self in the strip club thread. I think he may have made a second account in there to post too as another poster with 2 comments sounds exactly the same as him.

Yeah big up Jesus for dying for our sins and netting us a public holiday in the process.

As always, the subtleties are lost when it's condensed into a forum post... my ex (the younger sister, so always aware of her big sister's example) was lucky enough to find some passions (music and fashion) when she was young, figure out what she wanted to do fairly quickly and even luckier to never have a problem finding her way into a cool career in a glamorous industry (she's a pop music PR now after studying Fashion in London)... she's still almost as bad at mixing up consumption with self-worth, but she has the skills to pay the bills so it's not a problem. She sells vacuous dreams rather than buying them. Of course, her success exacerbates her sister's feeling of inadequacy and her sister's poor attitude encourages my ex to do even better... happy family!

People are complicated... there aren't any hard and fast rules to parenting as kids have so many inputs... a child learns from the experiences/mistakes of their older siblings and friends almost as much as their parents, so even if the parents stick to a similar method, the second or third kids might turn out entirely different from the first.
