just a quick thought on a first listen...maybe it has something to do with an increased attack on the bass notes + some portamento, but i'm not quite sure. that makes that "creeping in"-sound imho.

do you mean automating the attack on the amp envelope?

@blinkesko: hmm, maybe!
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

Aint it just been reversed and pitched up?

the bass sound has just been reversed, possibly some reversed reverb too

I have read that and did think about it but I dont think this is re-sampling but I may be wrong.

I just get the feeling from listening to it that its just a standard bass line coming from a synth/sampler and then some automation to change it as it plays.

Hope that makes sense :)

i was just posting it incase you hadn't read it. i listened to the song and originally i wouldn't know exactly how they did it but because others said it sounds reversed and pitched...that makes sense to me.

Well I thought it was simple wave form with some movement in the forward direction. So if it has been reversed and is given that effect, wouldnt it sound like its going backwards normally?

i don't really follow you. it sounds like a fairly basic waveform, but obviously not quite as simple as a sine. and it sounds like its reversed because it kinda does that sucking into it then plays forward.

Write a bassline with a slow-ish attack. load into slicex (or your DAW's sampler). Add a marker at the start of each bass note, then add one at the peak of that bass notes attack. Put the puzzle pieces together however you like.

Once I got home and listened on my speakers I could hear things a bit clearer.

I couldn’t hear the different notes at work and since people have said about playing some of the notes backwards, it makes sense! Can hear different notes going forwards and backwards.

1) make a big fat tone, make it go on for ages though (minute or more!)

2) bounce it out and make it fatter (frequency splits, reverb on tops, overdrive etc) and route it to a group - chuck a bit of compression on it to get it gelled back together) and bounce this again.

3) load it into a sampler. now you have this big fat, long tone, you want to get some variation in it - i tend to automate some lpf cutoff (try and get loads of shapes into it) and portamento it up an octave (makes it lurchy but always in key) and get all the best bits, i don't do much more than this, but i'm sure you'll have some better ideas than me - you should now have a big long fat noise with shitloads of movement in it, render this out.

4) load it back into a sampler, turn the velocity to amp off, and then set velocity to sample start time. you can now access any of the 127 points in the sample, using the one patch you've made you'll have 127 variations, some with filter down, some fully open, some wamps, some shutting down filter stabby bits, some octave jumps up with filter, some octave jumps that are quite lpf'd, some with lurches back down to the root note.

if you put a tiny bit of portamento on this you can do all sorts of things just by overlapping or not overlapping the notes to trig different parts - you can copy a section and drastically edit it just by moving the velocity slightly - you can make some pretty mental basslines as once you've made it - the hard work is done, and minor tweaks make massive differences.
How can I do this in the EXS24? I've gotten to the point where inserted the processed bass note into the EXS and am wanting to assign a specific velocity to a specific part in the sample. I've put the start sample as the destination in the matrix and source as velocity but it doesn't seem to work. is there anyway to assign a specific velocity to a part of the sample? or am i doing something completely wrong?

At roughly 1:56 the bass starts to move around a bit. I don’t know how to describe it but the bass kind of slides from one hit to the next. I know how you make ur synth slide from one note to the next using portamento but this sounds like it is moving forward to the next hit, if that make sense? or is it portamento?

Earlier in the tune the bass sounds more static and then it does this movement so maybe he started automating something for the switch up?

assign velocity to control the attack of the envelope instead of volume.

Interesting to note that when I am experimenting with the originally posted technique, I am finding much less interesting results using a pure sine w/ distortion and whatnot. I suppose it makes sense in retrospect, as the sound isn't originally covering a broad range of the frequency spectrum.
