some people don't know the difference between "respect" and "putting on a pedestal".

with the result that some guys ("assholes") think that ANY real respect for women makes them pussies

and others ("nice guys") think that fawning coupled with good old fashioned patriarchal bullshit amounts to respect.

both wrong.

had an okcupid message from this guy once with a horrible profile about how he's a nice guy and a nerd and you should try him for once because he'll totally worship you if you give him a chance and do anything you want. like, what? i don't need a cult following thanks

You should become friends with the girl yeah, but make your intentions clear as soon as possible and never pretend that you 'just' wanna be friends. You shouldn't fall in love with her, pretend you didn't and then act like you just like the girl platonically and 'be there for her no matter what', while secretly feeling entitled to sex from her just because you're being 'nice' to her.

That's "the friendzone". I considered my ex-girlfriends 'friends' too, just with an added layer of intimacy.
