i've been reading a lot about 70's psychedelic/prog rock mixing on gearslutz but after countless pages discussing snare drum sounds i couldnt be arsed anymore

wub, how bout covering a song? kode9 and the spaceape covered prince, and the result was pretty cool wasnt it
saves you the hassle of coming up with all the melodic material, try to somehow find a midi transcription of a song you like and use that as a starting point maybe?

Funny you should mention that I've had an idea brewing for about 18months now of covering a 'psychedelic' song, might look into that.

Got me thinking...mix your tunes like the would have in 60s/70s. Eight tracks max. Limit send returns. Could use Bootsy plug ins for dat analogue vibe, bounce stuff to cassette and VHS could have the same result...

Maybe use an acoustic drum kit rather or chop hits out of a break to use...no layering just raw drum sounds....fuck it get a four piece band together and have do a dubstep choon.

I see one of two things happening:

1) hackers gonna hack, and they'll just pick a new one
2) people give up making music

You think people would really give up if Massive was somehow taken from them? I feel like if you took my favorite tools away I'd find other ways to make music, but a lot of folks seem really flighty about making music, I question their motives.

take a look at a lot of questions on the production board with regards to different sounds, people want to learn what knobs and buttons to pretty to get X sound in Y program. Take away Y and how many of them will try and figure it out in Z?...

I don't really disagree...I just wish people weren't in it for ??? I dunno, I just like making music. I'm not saying I wouldn't do it as a career if I could...I don't know what I'm saying...this whole attitude just blows my mind no matter how much I see it and accept that it's true. When I bought my student copy of FL studio, I bought a boxed version through an academic software outlet online. I had to wait for the new version to come out. I spent my whole winter break making tunes in the demo of FL Studio w/o the ability to save...I'd just get blunted in my apartment and make tunes for like 10 hours a day. They were terrible...but damn...good times!

and thats because to you FL had value, same with me and Reason. I bought, and dammit i want to learn this program. but when you torrent basically your entire "studio" is it really of any value to you?

Absolutely. I think torrents are the problem, then. I'm guessing people who buy Massive (or whatever synth) would probably feel the same way and want to learn. I think a lot of teens, from the US anyway, get a lot of shit bought for them. There is def. a sense of entitlement.

BTW, I'm always jealous of Reason users...I'm often tempted to buy it and rewire into FL Studio.

Oh man. The Mopho is a beast. The saw waves are beautiful. They are raw, but rich. I don't know how to describe them exactly. If you make bass music the Mopho is a sound investment--the Curtis Lowpass filter on it is raw, in a very, very good way. The feedback distortion is OK, but it's hard to find a sweetspot about half the time--it always sounds a little too much or too little to my ear. There are lots of internal modulation options and the menu diving to program isn't bad at all. With four assignable knobs you can do all the live tweaking you want. You can also input sounds into it to use the filter--this feature is mono...but who cares? It sounds great. I got mine for 265 USD, probably one of the best deals I've ever gotten. I do usually do post processing if I'm going for a twisted reese or something like that. But you can go pretty far internally, it just doesn't have any effects.

Yeah, tbh, I just wanted a good base source for my reeses, something with a nice and colourful low end, that can be overdrived for analog low end distortion, shit like that, simple with two oscillators. Then process those with Kontakt (and maybe an e-mu in the future ) I'm considering getting one or a slim phatty, those are relatively "cheap" over here.
