Information is too powerful, riz. They just cannot keep the web open. As it is, they're losing control of the people on a daily basis. If it were allowed to continue we'd have anarchy. One of the most powerful (and therefore) dangerous features of the web it that it allows for the open dissemination of real information about governmental action which reveals that law is a one way street, constraining the thoughts and actions of the people but not the law creators or enforcers. As the fallacy of the rule of law is revealed, people (rightly) no longer feel they are bound by the law, and from that we get the collapse of most interdependent societal systems.
Now try to imagine Syria like conditions in a content wide country with 100+ nuclear reactors, some of which are already actively leaking.
The web must be turned off.
As is I'm surprised no one is chatting about youtube's plan to filter out independent music.

This is the end of the rule of law in America.
Lois Lerner's white house coordinated activity to attack political adversaries, and the now obvious destruction of evidence to thwart criminal investigation is the end of the rule of law in America.
Fast and Furious's goal of attacking 2nd amendment rights by shuttling weapons to Mexican drug cartels which would then use those weapons to kill Americans is the end of the rule of law in America.

Too big to prosecute Mexican drug cartel banker HSBC is the end of the rule of law.
I could go on for pages. The summery execution of handcuffed suspects is the end of the rule of law... It is unending...
The federal government at every turn completely disregards settled law, and in fact, acts criminally. If the creators and enforcers of the law violate the law, there is no reason to follow the law.

You Have Until Friday Midnight (ET) To Ask The FCC To Save Net Neutrality

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler (R) roars with laughter at the White House last year. (Getty)
The Federal Communications Commission will closing its commenting period on May's ruling on net neutrality at Friday midnight, Eastern time. If you're concerned about broadband companies to charging websites in exchange for faster service lanes, effectively ending the democratic Internet, now's a good time to let them know.
Earlier this year, FCC Chairman (and former telecomm lobbyist!) Tom Wheeler proposed new rules that would allow websites to strike "commercially reasonable" deals with broadband companies—meaning websites with cash to burn can obtain faster streaming service, while those that don't will be trapped in the slow lane.
The FCC voted to advance that proposal in May, and offered up a comment period that was set to expire on Tuesday; they extended that period to midnight on July 18th thanks to the sheer volume of comments. As of noon today, they'd received 1,030,000 submissions. These included comments from big companies like Comcast and Netflix, the latter of which blasted Wheeler's proposal, noting "No rules would be better than rules legalizing discrimination on the Internet."
You can leave a comment on the FCC's website, or you can email the FCC at openinternet@fcc.gov. Once the commenting period closes, a full commission will vote on the proposal before the end of the year. And for a more entertaining look at how the death of net neutrality will negatively effect the Internet, here's John Oliver:

Does the FCC decide about my net neutrality?

I think webmasters and internet providers have the right to engage in any contract with each other.... but why does congress and the FCC have a say in this?

Well they do in the US I guess, but I doubt a federal organization has say over here.

I think it should be turned over to the UN tbh

The internet is not something that you can just "turn over" It's just something that exists when (for the most part but not exclusively) privately owned computers are connected to each other over a network. Each computer, each server, everything, is owned by someone, and by taking part of the internet people are voluntarily associating with others. By turning the internet 'over' to some institution, you're giving that institution the right to regulate someone else's property. And when did I or anyone consent that that insitution can rightfully own part of my pc? Whether it's the UN or the FCC, both would be infringing on my property rights.test recordings wrote:America owns the net. It's like 'turning over' "fun" to the UN. We don't trust America with "fun" so we need the UN to regulate it. It makes no sense. The internet is an abstraction, it's not an object or a resource.

Fair enough, I didn't understand it properly then.
Why can't people just sidestep this net neutrality shutdown then? Surely you could just connect yourself some way... wait, they could lock access at the website right? So youtube could prioritise A&T customers or whatever. I'm still confident there are ways around this, like LAN gaming etc

Their only chance is to shut off the minds, as the minds will always work around, through, or without any form of technology.
