What is it with hip-hop and people using other people's opinion on them as a way to judge how good rappers are?

Like yeah, Wayne influenced a lot and impacted a lot. People also have a notoriously shit taste in music. So why do we use people's shitty taste as a benchmark for quality?

I'm not solely basing my opinion on him off of his popularity. He has plenty of utter dog shit that he's released, but that doesn't make his quality releases any less quality.
