Speak to prisoners incarcerated for life and see how many of them wouldn't want to experience tomorrow if it was offered.Nihilism wrote:We should stop thinking that the death penalty is wrong. 'Cause what's the point of living if that means you're isolated from the world and every day hoping it will be your last day? And even when someone comes out, their lifes mean nothing anymore. And i'm not saying they should apply the death sentence to even a thief, but when you give someone a life sentence isn't it better to just give them the needle?
But then again, our world is based on the (most corrupted) moral rule that life is good and death is bad. Don't get me wrong, killing someone is definitely wrong, but what if it's a better solution for both parties? And believe me, based on all those documentaries (Louis Theroux is one of them) i saw were prisoners are getting questioned what they want, living in jail or getting the death penalty, it's just shocking how many are choosing for the death penalty.
Not many.

I think that's more because our will to life is interfering when asking directly, but (like they did in those documentaries) give someone a month or two to think about it and i'm thinking they're are more willing to get the death penalty. But then again, i'm based it on those documentaries. So it's not really a fact.magma wrote:Speak to prisoners incarcerated for life and see how many of them wouldn't want to experience tomorrow if it was offered.Nihilism wrote:We should stop thinking that the death penalty is wrong. Wouldn't it be slightly "fairer" to allow people to commit suicide as/when they wanted? Execution is always at the State's behest, but if a lifer's been through counseling and still wants out, nobody should stop them IMHO.
A lot of people do great things whilst serving life sentences. Tookie Williams, for example, was doing America a lot more good alive than he is dead.

Re: Ideas That You Feel Are Ready For Retirement
At the moment I feel strongly about echoing the sentiments of Kate Mill's response which I labelled as one of my favorites in the original post (Only "scientists" can do science) and expanding on it a bit more to focus the understanding of science. In particular, I take issue with the tendency to keep a lot of current scientific knowledge within circles of privileged academics with doctorates who tend to use overly complicated technical language to obscure ideas that would otherwise be easily accessible to anyone. I've read some brilliant books over the past year by authors in various fields who have done an amazing job at taking some of the most complex ideas in their areas of expertise and making them so easily understandable, using wonderful analogies and clearly laying out the reasoning behind arguments presented so that anyone reading can understand, think critically about them or even carry the logic further. However, the amount of literature I've read while doing work for uni which is just completely concealed by over-the-top vocabulary is ridiculous and screams out "bow before my intellect you peasant!" And I've noticed what seems to be a trend where people who tend to do this appear to be more likely to be the first to complain and label the general public as 'ignorant' and 'stupid' when public understanding falls so far behind current advancements in our knowledge about the universe. Science really excites me and I enjoy sharing that excitement so I'm easily annoyed by those who contribute nothing to public understanding of science while appearing to go out of their way (for all I know, they may not even do it consciously) to restrict knowledge in such an unnecessary way in order to be...well, euphoric stnuc
. I can really understand how people are put off by this and wind up completely disinterested.
Another one is the idea that humans are superior to all other species on the planet. I think this may partly stem from the idea that many people still seem to have that natural selection works in a linear way working consciously with a specific ultimate objective in mind as to the perfect organism where we are the closest things to perfection while all other species alive today are less developed/less advanced rungs on the ladder below us. I don't think that's really an issue within academic discourse anymore but I still see it as very common among the general public. I am particularly bothered when the attitude of human superiority reaches the point where any notion of us being related to other species causes disgust and even despair in people (for example, the idea that there can be no purpose to life if you share dna with other species) and, in the extreme, I doubt that letting this go unchallenged helps much when it comes to animal abuse and trying to combat the attitude that other animals are mindless creatures here for us to do with as we please.

I don't give a fuck about your hippie opinion if you think GM crops are bad, nuclear power is so dangerous, and vaccines cause illnesses. Go fuck off and live on an island where i never have to see you, you can grow your own food from your own excrement fertilizer, peddle a bike for power to post stupid fucking pictures on instagram and die of dysentery because you don't understand clean water because you're afraid of chlorine.
