Virtual Box? Do tell, Looks like i need that.

The non-open source version of it has USB support.

If that doesn't bother you then you can just type

sudo apt-get install virtualbox

in the console to get the open-source version (assuming you're using Ubuntu). it'll install a fair few libraries if you haven't already got them, but the whole thing's only about 50-60 megs. With it you can create virtual machines that can support a pretty wide range of operating systems, I've got it running XP in that pic.

I'd love to hear about how it runs on fast PCs, cause I'm only using it on a laptop. If it's a viable platform to run games on then I'm going to take XP off my desktop once & for all Having said that, for my uses (fl studio using VSTis) there's no slowdown issues at all

I'd move to Linux if I could get my routers software for it.. Sucks really being left to use XP just cause of internet.

it's great for business but i can't really see the point in having it on a home pc. the only reason i do is to learn my way around it for work.

1. I believe there are no or very few active viruses out there that affect Ubuntu. I know people who dont even bother running AV although I still do.

2. Reason for having it on a home PC? Shit, seriously when I started this I was making a statement about the shitness of Vista but I just love it. The more I learn the more I love it. I've pulled out old dead laptops that couldn't run XP and stuck Xubuntu on them and they make brilliant Internet only machines that were "dead" before. It's the developer community around Linux I love. If you love firefox over IE because of the extensibility then Linux is to Windows what Firefox is to IE.

Mate, first of all you should do your research. Viruses are suprisingly made for Linux too, but what you are failing to remember is the OS is open source.

Someone can take it, meddle with it and have their own version which means people who can create fixes for the operating system distro's arent just the people who work for the company who made the distro like Microsoft.

If I wanted to make a virus to cause havoc, I would make one for windows due to the fact its the worlds most popular operating system (hundreds of millions schools, offices, librarys and home users) compared to Linux.

Oh also, it costs Microsoft money to fix vulnerabilities in their own operating system, not Linux. Just takes a nerd in his mothers basement.

well you'll need a windows cd (or an .iso of it)

Then just fire it up, click on New

it's a bit more involved than that, but this should help:

One thing to bear in mind though, when you get to the hard drive bit you're going to want to click on 'New' and setup a new virtual disk for it to use.

It's a piece of piss though, only adds about 2 minutes to the usual time it takes windows to install.

What is it you prefer about it, anyway? I've used both and there doesn't appear to be that much difference...I'm using them on a workstation rather than a server level though

The VMWare player is free. I prefer it because its the only one ive used

Currently running Debian through it making sure when we get our new server we can export all our configs and compiled php
