i love the texture you get from 8bit sound. its like the digital equivalent of lovely crackly vinyl.
there was a rephlex album, JP Buckle - flyin LoFi, where the guy used really basic old 8bit samplers, and retro synths, and ive never heard anything like it , apart from these Quarta bits, since. Buckle did jungle, electronica, dancehall, bashment-influenced tracks and it all sounded so crunchy and warm..... genius stuff.

is it?
NO.
NO.
Dude, finally! Been anticipating this one for months now and was extremely disappointed when Boomkat delayed its release for another two weeks. When and where exactly will HDB005 be available if I may ask?hyperdub wrote:Vinyl of HDB005 L.V. feat. Errol Bellot & Dandelion - Globetrotting/Takeover next week.

I think it's a fucking big move by Hyperdub putting releases like this out. Once the label is established to really start experimenting and pushing good interesting music, that's what good labels do. Put out what they believe in. To be honest I'm not a massive fan of either of the tunes on this release (in fact I'm not a massive Hyperdub fan oddly - bar Kingstown Dub, Skeng & Burial, they're fucking large) but just listening to that guys myspace was quality and 'sbcc' is fucking deep!

Now we always suspected that Kode 9's influence went beyond the confines of the insular dubstep scene, but few could have expected this latest release from his influential Hyperdub imprint. Quarta 330 is a Japanese producer, so not from your usual South London dubstep posse but more than that, he produces using sounds better suited to the 8-bit chip on a Nintendo Gameboy (pre-DS, you know, the little grey ones. come on!). Now the chiptune genre has been around for ages, but rarely does it collide with the bass weight you'd expect from dubstep, but Quarta 330 isn't the first artist we've seen do this lately, no the astute among you will no doubt have Disrupt's killer 'Foundation Bit' still firmly in mind, and that's a good starting point for thinking about Quarta 330. I say starting point because where Disrupt uses the chip sounds as a starting point, Quarta 330 uses them singularly, which makes his re-hash of Kode9's seminal '9 Samurai' quite immensely good. Interestingly Kode9 originally used samples from a Japanese film while producing the track, so in many ways it has come full circle and this fresh 8-bit version is so impeccably charming you can imagine it slipping well into almost any DJ set. 'Sunset Dub', Quarta 330's original track is stunning too, with more bass than has ever been squeezed out of the humble 8-bit chip and the kind of melodies that would have Mario chucking out fireballs in a frenzy. A stunning and surprisingly original 12" - we're lovin' it!
