Bob Crunkhouse wrote: I dont. So the black community were worried about "urban" being a white middle class term for "black music", sooooo 1xtra decided to just call it "new black music" without thinking who that might alienate?!?! its a complete facre..

Also, denying its heritage is racist? is fucking MAD, if thats the case we better start labelling all music, art, film, with its racial origins just incase we offend anyone right?

And pleaase stop with this bullshit about "real" racism, no ones comparing this to slavery or institutionalised racism, its just a lazy innacurate term that does nothing but alienate and irratate people, as illustrated by most peoples feelings in this thread.

I personally think "Urban" is a far better word.
dont get me wrong i am not saying that urdan is racist just that some have argued that it is an inappropriate term and that 1xtra had to take that into account...and i dont think that labeling everything on 1xtra black is ideal...

generally if someone finds something (racially)offensive then it is racist...
if you are not black and find the 'black music' term racist then it is...which is fair...on the same logic though if a black person finds the term urban racist then it is as well...
obviously the current description angers a lot of people (although not me) and a more appropriate term needs to be found...i dont know what that should be...i originaly wanted to point out that there were also issues around the term urban and that it was not as simple as just switching the name...

i think this is a relativley interesting argument, if you havent added anything to the discussion and you think its "waste" then piss off to another thread, nuff people have put there point across here and its interesting to hear what people have to say, u sir are the "waste" im afriad.

On topic: i respect your point of view wil? i think "urban" is a troublesome term that could obviously lead to more problems, guess it comes down to wether you think that its a better term than whats in place now and if you think its worth implementing.

Rah, rant over anyway.

quite funny...."new black music"....i think is a stereotype which isnt needed....but funny to say, most of the employees there at 1xtra are white...lol

Its a tough one to call, and im not gonna get in the middle of it, but ive heard both sides of the story, and still cant really agree with 1 side....

why not just call it "new good music" ?

;)

I think its more of a 'class' issue then a 'race' issue if you need to catagorize music that way.

Uh-huh. It's not even a debate...it's a pointless whinge with no hope of a resolution.

You know it's not racist, it's just the best shot at 'edgy street' branding that the marketing minds can muster.

Leave it.
