well obviously there are some very sick people roaming aroundALEKS ZEN wrote:this death to america is all a bit silly really isnt it. why would anyone want to kill america? its a prosperous land with a lot to offer
the sort of people who want to wipe out whole nations off the face of the earth
the sort of people who log into a forum like this and with one of their first posts sends up "death to america" and then continues to be extremely rude to anyone who evens hints at disagreement

people like that should be tracked down through their deluded internet ramblings, locked up and force fed puppy turds, with a side helping of cat sick

you don't want discussion.spicerack wrote: ...discuss ?

discuss?
Spicerack's entire rant has been predictable. What country are you from?
Surely a counrty that has exclusively peaceful green pastures.

well, to be fair the article on salon is spot on, but what's the point in wasting our energy adding a viewpoint to someone that just wants to bark instead of discuss. in general ,salon is interesting at times, but they do go off on the rant thing quite a lot.relaks wrote:To elaborate:relaks wrote:We may not want to admit it, but a provocative thread title with a political link inside is what we call 'predictable'.

this reminds me of a conversation i had a few years back with an aussie gent who was over here to do his Masters. he would go on and on and on, esp drunk, about how us Americans were.... blaming us for being self-centered, myopic, yadda yadda
its just funny.....because i've never had any of the views he said i did... and it was only through living here for a bit that he realized there was quite a bit of dissent amongst those in the States...
i've been a progressive as long as i can remember. was heavily involved in protests and rallies. used to hand out flyers in Harvard Square. yadda yadda
here's where my problem is: I can't afford to do anything now. My day-to-day is expensive and it taxes me to the degree that all I want is some kind of domestic peace. I can't say this is what every person does. I can only speak for myself.
i'm tired. and i think this is the part of my life parents reached when they first got apathetic. because as much as you want to care.....its not always Paris Hilton and beach resorts in the US. I work hard every single day to *barely* break even and its not an excuse...but this fatigue is just soul crushin. So many times I've sat down and cried because I'm being broken by living a regular life.
So not only do my votes count for nothing (because I've voted against Bush both times....I voted against Guiliani both times when I was living in NYC....I voted against Pataki.... They all STILL WON -- or stole....w/e), but then to add insult to injury, I can't even enjoy my life because the people who were voted/moved in to positions of power that I didn't ask to be there, are now crushin the economy and breaking the wills of average Americans by fatigue.
Don't dare lump me in with my oppressors. Thats a juvenile assessment of the situation. Its amazing to me that even though people can acknowledge there are what....250+ million in the country......that with all those people, we all think the same... brilliant deduction, that

troll or not, these are good points. dissent has been washed out of the collective psyche. its not fashionable to want to bring down the system. it is fashionable to wear obama t-shirts.spicerack wrote:It's so now more than ever. Now that the media circus has turned it's gaze towards the election. It's sooooooooo 7 years ago to hate on America.
I want protest songs. I want people with balls doing subversive acts against the government. I want blanket press coverage of riots in the street, demonstrations on campus, sit ins at government buildings. I want court martials for crimes of war. I want bush impeached. I want revolution. Is that really too much to ask for ?But in all honesty, what the fuck do you want from us? We protest, we vote, we organize. What the fuck do you want? And where are YOUR solutions?

true. all good points. but my point has been that this guy has dismissed the actual dissent that has been happening in this country, and then turned this whole discussion into some passive-aggressive "who's done more" bullshit. i agree wholeheartedly with EVERYTHING that he wants in the above paragraph. but pseudo-revolutionary platitudes don't cause change. action does. and thus far i see a lotta talk and a lotta shitty attitude, but a major unwillingness to recognize any points other than his own.Parson wrote:troll or not, these are good points. dissent has been washed out of the collective psyche. its not fashionable to want to bring down the system. it is fashionable to wear obama t-shirts.spicerack wrote:It's so now more than ever. you know what i want? i want less empty rhetoric and more substance. i want less bullshit and stupid childish namecalling and more real discussion. thus far i have seen neither in this thread.
this is all shit i have seen time and time again amongst activists, radicals and revolutionary movements. the competition to prove who's more willing to put themselves on the frontlines in these fights, the patronizing tone of "holier than thou" radicals, the people who care so much about the oppressed people but then still spit sexism like somehow that's acceptable in a revolutionary movement...you name it, i've dealt with it. and until people pull their heads out of their asses and realize that alienating other people who actually agree with them in the larger sense works against us all, it all just ends up like some dumb junior high school temper tantrum.
at the end of the day, i want the people in the streets, shaking shit up so badly that there is no choice but to get out of iraq because we shut the fucking country down. that is one of MANY things i would like to see happen in this country. but that won't happen while we are all so busy sniping at each other on internet forums. if we are to have a discussion on how to make that mass dissent happen, it's gonna take more than some inflammatory subject header and namecalling toward anyone who isn't lockstep in line with the original poster's ideas.
i welcome the discussion of how to not only spur MORE dissent in this country, but how to make sure more people know about the dissent that is already happening. i welcome in depth discussion on a tactical level that addresses the complexities of this weird ass country that make it so damn hard to spur said mass dissent.
so again, more substance, less trite angsty flamebait.

yes, but the system for the most part works. for now. i don't think there should be any talk or action in bringing a system down unless someone has a better option in that can be put into place. i just hear talk of revolution but no real solution to fight for.Parson wrote:troll or not, these are good points. dissent has been washed out of the collective psyche. its not fashionable to want to bring down the system. it is fashionable to wear obama t-shirts.spicerack wrote:It's so now more than ever.
