Good to hear, not entirely surprised due to the media hype (and i don't believe he has a mad PR campaign behind him), I don't think he will win for a lot of reasons, one of which being the anonymity thing, although it would be brilliant seeing Kode go up, repeating at least 5 times that he isn't burial.
Fuck it spaceape should collect it, drop some bars.
I don't like how it's not voted for by the public, that stinks a bit. Although the most mainstream act would probably win it each time, so i don't know.
When are the actual awards? Ages away, no?

I think there is hype in that he gets ten times more press than the rest of dubstep put together and although he's good I'm not sure that he's ten times better than the rest of dubstep put together. And it's not that there's not some sort of hype machine behind him, it's just that the anonymity and the nature of the music make him quite easy to write about, and then there's a kind of snowball effect with the mainstream press where one paper writes about something and suddenly it's news and they all want to write about it, but not many of them are willing to stick their necks out and write about other artists from the same scene.

Just as a response to anyone who's asking why Burial ? Why not anyone else.
When you take Burial's music and compare it with any of the dubstep artists there's a massive difference. I mean the fact is people like Kode-9 seem to recognise this is all nothing new for a start, hence the whole hyperdub thing and not just 'dubstep' , for me the dubstep doesn't quite fit in many of the releases I've heard from them, so they are hardly a flagship for the 'dubstep' movement if they don't even claim to be part of it to begin with, in fact - If it was up to me, I'd say it's just modern electronic dub, unlike the stuff with the big growly basslines, which is most definately more in with the steppy thing.
A lot of dubstep is mixtool/DJ orientated, it's sparse, and very defined in order to cut across a big soundsystem, unfortunately the comments about dubstep becoming formulaic are reasonable, but that's not strictly a bad thing, it just means it's becoming defined, the problem is when quality control goes out the window which will happen in any scene.
Anyway - it's very focused, and really the magic starts to happen when the records are mixed up.
With Burial, each piece stands on it's own, not only that but there are indistinct rythyms and deep seated melodies which lack the sort of punch a DJ needs to get a party started for example.
I'm really not sure how anyone could compare Benga, Pinch, Headhunter, Pervalist or any of those cats to Burial , I don't think it's a fair comparison, their music sounds completely different, in mood, context and production style, Burial is mournful, reflective, almost in places retro sounding as if you've known it all your life, whereas artists like Benga are fresh, full of energy, fully pumped up and in your face.
Burial has a sound which easilly trancends boundaries whereas the rest is all very much defined as tools to work a dancefloor.
Another way I'd look on it is - Burial is fine art, Benga is Really cool Graphic design.
This isn't to detract from either, each has it's place, but I think things like the mercury prize are more interested in music across the board as opposed to anything which will only appeal to clubbers or people who are into dancing.
I think it's fantastic that he has been recognised, and as far as hype goes, I've yet to meet a person seriously into music, no matter what style who hasn't picked his first album and this album up and gone mental for it, I really do think this is one of those rare occurances where raw talent has prevailed
