Has anybody had Event turnout problems????
yeah, i'm sure there are exceptions, but I have been involved in the promotional side of things for a few years now and have access to all the door/bar turnout statistics for the clubs i work with (which are some of the biggest in my particular area). Bear in mind these are clubs which do full promotional runs (15k+ flyers, 150+ fly posters, standard posters, etc...) and have a good reach.dubstee wrote:Contentious.Dr H wrote:A lot of the nights are do are for between 500-2000 people, so pretty big turnouts, even in todays shitty economy. so yeah, maybe "everywhere" is a little too broad, but i reckon if you talk to the majority of club owners/promoters who have been doing this for more than 10 years now, they'll tell you the same - numbers are down and promoting a night is becoming increasingly harder.
shit, i was in a taxi the other night and even the driver was moaning that fri/sat nights don't pay him enough for a wage anymore!
Ez man, sorry if any repatition on what other heads said....
Have to agree the frequency of the night is to much for a start...
Have been promoting for 4 years and twice a month is rinsing people too much by any standards.... In Nottingham // nationwide the majority of the nights even the most established such as Detonate, Ram records I think Subdub, FWD >> ? only run once per month, unless a special event.
Was previously involved in DNB, have been pushing a new Dubstep // Techno // Fidget House night for half a year.
At the moment I only run it bi - monthly as this keeps it fresh and helps to pick the correct date for the night to succeed. After 4 events now, I am in the position to take the night monthly but will not do until after summer as I agree this is a tooough period.
Seems you have all the links i.e. mc's // friends on scene // would just recommend try to get university reps // heads involved in pushing the night as student crowd is masssive....
Also 1,000 flyers is not that great? think about how many get thrown away, normally go for 3 - 5,000.... atleast 50 - 80 posters in all record shops // food shops // cloths shops // duno about where u live but all these places are happy to support scene in Notts. Do you flyer after all similar nights in your town i.e where like minded peeps attend?
Facebook, forums, resident adviser stuff like that all help... finally 500 - 2000 is a massivley successful event, be realistic I average 320 - 360 people which is more the adequet fills the venue, and the dancefloor covers 2 - 3 headliners and an MC, free drinks for dj's, bit money for local lads and even a little profit. We do £4 cheaper guestlist if txt before event.... provide loads time for people to get this price goes up to £5 // £6 on the night.
I also give guestlist for help with promo, anyone who submitts 10 heads to £4 list gets free entry.... people really appreciate discounts...
anyways hope this helps big up's...

we put on a night in bournemouth called beat redemption and we've been at capacity for every single one. heres how we did it.
1.sick ass flyers. the kind youd want on your wall at home. a real work of art(we are all art and design students which helps)
2.live dub/reggae bands
3.art instalations from art students
4.tuck shops and stalls
5.a mix of music from electro to grim to tech house but with dubstep being the main genre
6.A TOP DUBSTEP DJ( this is the most inportant bit, as this draws the crowd in)
7.arcade machines
8.relaxed atmosphere
its all about the overall vibe. you need to offer something that other events dont. our night is essentially an indoor electronic music festival. weve only had three nights over three months but have smashed it each time. you need to have every single idea well thought out and properly executed.

It's not a matter of being edgy and hip it's a matter of having an eye catching design.Jolly Wailer wrote:its not like the dmz flyers are anything special tho..
and I've seen plenty of lame events that had hipster graphic design style flyers, edgy fonts and all else.
anyone saying they wouldn't go to a night on the principle of the flyer design seems like a right knobstay home then.

not that that counts for an awful lot, but it does leave a bad impression
and does the name Soul Funktion mean anything ? to me it certainly doesn't connote images of a dubstep night in any way.
i know we shouldn't worry about anything but the 'music' , but as much as we hate to admit it, all the promo, like name's, images etc... does matter alot.
also - what DJ's did you have down at the first event?

Re:
Yeah a good flyer helps but I would have to agree its a very very small part of the equation. That said some flyers just don't inspire at all but I won't mention names.jolly wailer wrote:its not like the dmz flyers are anything special tho..

Oh and forget paying names or any of that shit - that's icing on the cake and will most likely burn a big hole in your pocket. Its all about getting heads down by any menas necessary and making sure they have a good time at your night. Also remember a lot of people (shallow as that is) just wanna go out and flirt with the opposite sex, have a dance etc and don't really give a fuck about the music so bear that in mind.

Re: Has anybody had Event turnout problems????
often ppl try to stick to their own favourite styles too much
people want to come to a night to hear a nice mixture of any genre
these are all things which need to be taken into account
