TBH i have not really heard this kind of thing outside of movies before. Its really nice. You could try getting that snare drum to punch a little more. I like the reverse effect on the snare. The fill at then end of each heavy section sounds like it could be a little more than just the snare hitting a few times. That's just nitpicking though, the tune itself is great
Vocals at the beginning and end are nice.
2. BabyDoll
Again the snare needs some work. The bass part of it is nice, but it could use some more of that upper range hiss. Is it from a virtual drumkit by any chance? The beat in the intro sounds very flat and static, but after the sub kicks in there's much better variation, and it sounds wicked. Love the sample in the intro. The atmosphere is good. I'm used to the music i listen to having more fluctuation and modulation, but i think that's genre thing rather than being something wrong with your music.
3. Waterfront
I like this alot. The percussion really flows nicely, and the panning is just perfect. The pad sound's lushNothing bad to say about this one really. Maybe a little mod on the lead that comes in at 1:58 but that's stylistic i guess.
4. Trouble Downtown
I would do some more work on them basses. They sound like they could do with some more effects on them to get them to blend better with everything else. Again that snare could use more high end. Nice groove, and the risers in the background are great and give the track a good vibe.![]()
I know the snares need fixing, struggling to mix them well. Also on babydoll, is what from a virtual drum kit?

Oh no... it's just some snares that I layered from some live drum loops I have to sort of mimic them but with more "electronic" drums, although I've been looking at getting something like that - do you have superior drummer?JockMCPlop wrote:Was just asking if the snares are from BFD or superior drummer or something, because of the way they are articulated...mthrfnk wrote:Thanks a lotJockMCPlop wrote:thanks mthrfnk

i have BFD 2.0 its great for getting that live sound, not so good for the music i'm making right now. I used to use it for band practice. For the amount of money you would pay for one i would say don't bother.. You seem to be doing a pretty good job as is anyway.
Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
Ah okay... yeh I think it's pretty cool taking live loops and relayering them with more electronic drums definitely livens up standard drum patterns.JockMCPlop wrote:i have BFD 2.0 its great for getting that live sound, not so good for the music i'm making right now. Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
ok the new version of my track is up.
i changed it quite alot, i think it gains much more momentum now, and isn't quite as samey.
The trade off is that it now seems to have acquired a trancey 90s feel. Decide for yourself whether that's a good thing or not, i'm not sure

@jock
you can really hear the kick comping the bass. kind of distracting at times. lower the sub volume or add some beef to the kick?

@Eat Bass
as i think you were explaining, the transitions are odd, but the sound is not harsh to my ears.
sounds really human, some of the beats almost sound rather off time. esp at the end. sounds rather intentional though.
sweet sound at 49, (sounds like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGQFD6T3EPg). the first part is pretty great as well.

yeah there really is no transitions. i def need to work that in. sometimes it takes me a bit to think of how i want to transition so i just make the different parts to the song first and worry about the transition later.Pain Table wrote:@Eat Bass

@Haskey - i like how you pan some of the sounds, however during the bass part it seem you were lacking some high timbre to fill up that space to have fuller sound imo
@Pain Table - pretty good, the track has full sound, like some of the panned elements. if this is the sound your going for then keep it up
@JockMCPlop - your drum and percussion sound like they're not cutting through the mix. some eq or layering can fix that
ok here's my concept track of metalstep that im gonna start tomorrow or the next day

this is what happens when you work on a tune for a day without doing anything else... Can't see the forest for the trees.
cheers dude
Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@thelastthing: Intro is sweet, did you play the guitar? The drums are a bit weird, the pattern is really repetitive and the kick sounds like a tom - try switching it up for a punchier drum. The build is also really generic, there's no energy to it; just the riser and drum roll. Try and get some movement in the build and pump it up. The mids/basses sound good at the drop. Definitely a good start.
Updated this track for my EP, hows the bass & mix sounding to people?

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
thanks for the feedback all of you.
@mthrfnk
sounds great. the subs in the kick are so nice and the percussion is so driving. love this track.
maybe the second time the vocal sample plays (at 2:33) chop the vocal up a bit. having the exact same sample makes it seem a little repetitive.
no other comments concerning the mix. it sounds great.
@thelastthing
the drums are just really dragging along. there is no variation, and they are playing a really simple, slow pattern.
nice sound at :58
i would agree with mthrfnk that that kick sample is a little wimpy.

Hey guys thanks for your feedback, ad as soon I'm home I'LL listen to your work. Thanks again cheers
Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@ Pain Table: I like that bass. which synth did you use? you just need to find a hook
@ oprs : Wow man! that is a killer track. I'm jealous of your snare. since it's more an ambient track I wouldn't exagerate the mids.
@ Brothulhu : hearing your track again. Think you may put a little more verb on the snare. what do you say?
@ thelastthing : I like the concept!!! why don't you try using some messhuggah guitar riffs? It could sound crazy as hell. I know they have odd timings but you could come up with something never heard.
Soundcloud
Just keeping you updated on my work
Probably the intro needs some more fixing.
And true, I'm addicted gets somehow repetitive how you said so I took some of that off and did some variations.
The arp in the intro has been panned
Any Ideas for I'm addicted sample? and what about the sub? needs more sub?
thank you

Feedback
mthrfnk- you always have the best ambience. The bass is great. @:43- the vocal sample is cool, but around the end of the vocal sample it gets to be a bit much (mix wise, by that I mean with the atmosphere and the bass and the vocal all fighting each other. The drop is nice, and clear. The subtle panning also works pretty well. The sound at 1:54 also works well. The percussion from around 2 mins is solid.
jock- The atmosphere on this track is good, but at first the drums seem to be a little faster than the song feels (if that makes sense). They're really driving, and the rest of the song is kind of laid back. The vocals are really nice and fit well with the vibe of the track, that breathing sound that comes in and out is a good effect as well. The break in the middle is pretty dramatic, and I thought the drums should build back in rather than just starting back up. Solid production overall though.
Hashkey- Can't really comment with any accuracy on the subs since I'm using my walking around headphones. Liked where you were heading though. Percussion is on point, but you definetely need to do more with the sample if you're going to use it that much. There's loads you could do with it. Reverse it, Reverse it and chop it, modulate the reverb on it (have it get wetter or drier as it plays) pan it around. Or just don't use it as much. Either way. Good track though, even though I can't comment on the subs I feel the bass needs more presence, but that could depend on how the sub hits.
thelastthing- This is pretty good. The guitar riff gets a little repetitive, maybe shift an octave up or use single notes rather than power chords (haven't played guitar for a while) Another cool thing to do is to create a little solo riff based on the notes in your main riff. Ex) if your riff went G/A/D/G make a little solo that goes G/A/Gb/G#/A/A#/D/D/G#/G. Just a suggestion.

I was wondering if the vocals were too soft, and if any elements were out of place. I spent alot of time in the spectrum analyzer for this one, so I want to make sure its mixed well. Thanks for looking!

As for your track, digging the intro, some old school vibes. The bass is nice and the perc is punching through. The vocals are a little weird as they don't really add much, maybe repeat them more often to get them flowing with the track. The varying synth lines definitely keep it fresh as does the extra perc that comes in at like 2:20. Mix wise everything sounds okay except the piano - its too loud and harsh so try and fix that. Overall great job

Re: WIPs/unfinished tunes for feedback * no finished tunes *
@mthrfnk, your track was pretty well put together, although the bassline seemed to be a bit more aggressive than expected. either way it progressed nicely. i liked the percussion as well
@hashkey, good deeper dub sound, i would work on equing the mid bass just a bit, it just seems to have too much of something, hard to really pinpoint. enjoyed the listen though, good vibes.
@houston weather, i liked the minimalism of your track, it was simple but felt right, would maybe have a bit more variation in those hats and maybe scoop some of the mids on that snare, but thats just personal preference really.
ive been uploading a bunch of clips lately, trying to switch it up. feedback on any of them would be greatly appreciated. (brutally honest feedback if possible =D)

@ eye-sic
External destiny is wicked man you need to extend this out in to a tune. If I could give crit it would be the lack of variation in your elements, try finding a counter motif to the original melody you've got and drop it in where appropriate (I hate saying that but you know what I mean)
I like the Dynamic range in Mystic and the Bass/Shot/Melody call and response you got goin on in there is wicked. Also all your sound design/mixing on the different clips is top notch. Keep it up!
@Houston Weather
It feels like something is a little lack luster in this track. IT's got groove but I think the synths/samples you're using for the hook elements are a little thin, re: freqs/width. Try playing with Chorus/Flange/Auto Panning? to widen stuff up and add a bit more variation. You've got a good grasp of arrangement though I think you should spend a little more time on sound selection/design. A general rule of thumb is "do not settle for a sound until it's the absolute perfect sound for that element". Don't be afraid to try weird stuff either. Good track though keep it up!
@Hashkey
Immediately I felt like the track was lacking a lot of top end which makes it feel very removed. I think the I'm addicted sample would sound pretty sick if it was heavily over compressed and squashed up in your face with some soft saturation to bring out the sibilance a little. Make it feel more immediate. Plus the Kick could do with layering a short hat over the top of it, compressed in to it to give it some click/snap in the tops, It's a pretty dull/thudy kick and when the tune drops nothing really opens up in the higher register to make the tune feel like it's closing ground on you. It's ok to actually fully exploit the upper register to make a tune feel much closer and higher fidelity. Filthzilla makes great use of this technique. Pay attention to the upper register; all the washyness of the hats, the snap/smush of the kick/snare/crash and the sharp leads/pads e.t.c. It's all used to add immediateness to a tune, that without will sound thudy and sort of unclear.
Ok. Me. I've been away from producing for a while and thrown this together over the last two days. It's using a weird key change from C minor to A minor at the end of each bar, the keychange sounds pretty slick imo and I want to try exploit it. All the elements are there but I'd like some ideas on where to take it, at the moment it's just a bit of an intro I'm not too happy with and an 8 bar loop repeated. Ideas on sub/lead/motif/general arrangement would be great
I'm not particularly fond of the sub either and Sound Cloud seems to have done some weird squashy compression which has made it all sound a little less sharp but hey, it's a wip.
