"Hyperion" by Dan Simmons, first in a series of truely EPIC science fiction books that spans thousands of years and the just about the entire universe... Here's all I gotta say, if more producers out there read these books, there would be a whole genre of music dedicated to "the Shrike", he's the spikey bladed silver beast on the cover.

That's on my 'too read' pile. One of my friends wouldn't shut up about how good it was.

this sounds RIGHT up my street, will defintly check it out...

@Datura, the whole Dune series is good but imo NOTHING beats the first one, hands down best sci fi novel i have read...

I've heard that, and so far the 2nd book hasn't grabbed me half as much.

I read the Dune series of books a fair old while ago. I remember it to be pretty slow going, and ended up just trying to finish it for finishing it's sake.

Leonard has quite a unique style..Maybe somone like Carl Hiassen would be worth checking?

The Road, by Cormac McCarthy (author of No Country for Old Men). Pretty cool post-apocalypse book, soon to be a movie I hear.
