I didn't make it, it's a skrillex' stem.
I'm just suprised about the amount of background noise in his growls.
If you have good ears you can hear some kind of really short loop of water pouring.
That extra noise would be the shit tonne of distortion needed to make growls like that. And water pouring is one of the best samples to granulise. Personally, I'd love for someone to do a good tute on Kill the Noise type 'growls' (they aren't really). I know he uses maelstrom for most of them but I'd love to see it done in Massive or FM8.

On another note, my latest track has some growls.

Really, I have other skrillex' stems and I hear something like fireworks starting and whatever.

@edit
I extracted that background noises using spectral editor

You can clearly hear a lot of white noise and water pouring

Btw, I'm suprised, you can see some hand-made drawings in the spectrum of those growls I posted.

I don't know about that water stuff guys, I think you're over thinking. It's been proven that you can make good growls with just synthesis and distortion, and you get exactly that type of white noise if you crank up the distortion in ohmicide or whatever. I don't see why he would sample water or fireworks starting just to get some white noise hiss when it has nothing to do with the core sound. I'm fairly sure that's just the harmonics from the distortion.

Noisia layer foley over their stuff (in one track their reeses were layered with sounds of one of them pressure washing their car), Skrillex spent time with Noisia making his stuff, wouldn't surprise me if he picked up this technique too.

@mromgwf, I'd be interested in those stems?

@Sure_Fire, people have saif that some stuff in the track in my sig sounds like KTN growly stuff - want any info on them?

K, will send you a pm.

But not as good as skrillex. :z:

I heard somewhere that all skrillex' growls were made by feed me.. just look at his EP's after smans... no super growls here.

That's not water, that's the bieffect of lots of distortion sometimes. I've made loops that have exactly the same type of sound after them. Noticed this one of the first times I listened to needed change.

Regardless of who made them, distort anything, filter out the highs and you'll hear the same hiss. About noisa using foley, that's pretty cool. But do you honestly think that water pouring makes the basis for Skrillex growls? I'm not saying it's impossible, just, why would you bother with it? Surely FM or wavetable synthesis is a much better place to start? There's a big difference between a reese and a growl too, reeses can be a lot more, well, hissy. They kinda hover around, a growl needs to be more, well, compressed, if you get me. I'm not sure foley sounds are as good an idea for a growl. But I dunno, don't really experiment too much with sampling tbh.

I'm talking about layering field recordings with your base growl.

Yeah I know you are, and I can see how maybe for a reese it would be cool. But that much hiss in a growl wont sound good (imo) because distortion introduces a lot, and also the hiss you're refering to sounds identical to the one from a lot of distortion. Try it for yourself, distort the shit out of a growl, filter it and you'll hear the same sound. It just sounds like water. Pretty sure it isn't. No need to add extra highs for a heavily distorted sound.

I thought I might share this with you guys. It's a preview of my latest track, remember it's just a preview I have a newer version I haven't posted. The drop is made up of some growls and some reese basses. The growl is just 3 saw wave oscs in massive filtered by a lowpass and a double notch filter. Then I added a sine shaper, p shaper, b tube, and d expander. I also automated the eq in massive to give it a vowely effect. Out of these simple building blocks I'm sure you could resample to make some gnarly growls. The reese is way more complicated though. Also I know the track sounds like its in a metal box or something. Its because of zippy share not me. Enjoy! http://www9.zippyshare.com/v/71720888/file.html

I kinda just found the sweet spot with the phase. The dimension expanders size is all the way down and I also found that if osc 3 is on deep throat it sounds better.

KTN uses massive for his growls. The patch he uses is based on the modern talking wavetable with a bandreject making the vowels :)

Yeah man that would be sick. If you could just give me the rough idea behind them (oscilators, filters distortion, effects etc.), I like toying around with things rather than actually building them to excactly like they are from in depth tutes and what not (been like that since my lego days :cornlol: )

You can get mad growls out of just synthesis and distortion, however the best synths (i.e. Noisia etc.) come from layering harmonically rich sounds over the synth sound. A good way to do it is to start with the water sample etc. and do weird shit with it like granulasation/timestretching and then automate a synth line based on what the sample is doing.

This is an awesome tute where the guy uses samples of water pouring and plastic being stretched and layers synths over top. Part 2 has the synth part.
