Why do all other growl sounds that aren't the one used in Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites suck so much compared to it? They sound dull and amateur, even the latest Skrillex tracks suck compared to the one used on that track.
I think we will never know how in hell he came up with that sound. No one is getting even close.

This. The growl bass is right at the front of the mix with very little else going on. Even the drums are really low in the mix and sound pretty bad (muffled).

That's the way he made his drums back then. The growl doesnt sound great only because it's at the front of the mix, it's a great growl. No one has made a bigger and better sounding growl imo

lol, all brostep is centered around the growl sound. That comment doesn't make sense. Im talkign about the actual sound. It's the best growl sound ever, no one even comes close. Compare that sound to his latest stuff and it's cringeworthy.

The first growl sounds like straight Modern Talking in Massive, it's something you could recreate. Now, try it with the second growl, and you'll fail. It's another league and seems like he is putting less and less effort since that EP. The rest of the artist on the genre never came any close to this.

It doesn't seem like he "moved to a different sound", it just seems like he can't get something as awesome again (remember he said he lost ALL his patches when he lost his laptop in a gig) so he is using more basic sounding growls and filling the gaps with annoying high pitched noises.

Yeah I was going to say the same thing...he got his laptop stolen/lost in April 2011....so I'm pretty sure he lost all those patches he made/forgot how to make them again exactly.

I love how everyone focuses on scary monsters, the Scatta bassline was far more impressive. It's probably just a highly evolved reese with a shitload of layering. Something I've been doing lately in FM8 is making a growl, then adding an extra operator (usually a sine wave), setting it to modulate the 2 or 3 other active operators and automating the out value of said operator. I'm assuming that's how skrillex gets more than 1 vowel sound out of a patch (maybe at least).

I'll upload something once I've sussed it out a bit more.

i would say the SMANS moooo growl is the best he's ever made, i dont like his new stuff at all. I remember when i was so excited when a new skrillex track came out, noones new tracks excite me anymore. what is happening. The last good skrillex song was equinox.

I wish he would make some more tracks more like the remixes he did La Roux/the sexy lady one.
So chaotic, so raw, but still, the energy in those tracks is just so... powerful imo

Some of the songs on there may as well have been made by skrillex, and they're pretty top notch. Hoedown, Nuclear and City 2 City are my faves. I know people give him shit cos he's sampled popular artists in the past but his music is amazing. Also some of the growls on that EP are as good as skrillex growls, can't compare to scary monsters though.
