I tried to make complextro using my breakstep track. It's 120 bpm.

@Craggle
Love the intro. Final fantasy and stuff.
Snare is too harsh on the highs.
Percussion doesn't really fit chilled atmosphere of the melody.
Kick sounds weird on the low end. Kick pattern is also weird.

@Cheeky
I'd cut highs on the intro melody a bit more, drop onces however are a bit thin. Atomic bomb quote fits nice.
Feeling that sub :D
Mid thing at 0:55 sounds kinda weird, mb some eq will help.
Percussion is awesome.

@knobgoblin
Fx are nice. Like the overall tension. Percussion thing on the left sounds weird because of the pattern.
1:13 sounds kinda muddy
Tune is kinda repetitive, no development.

@kongret, i definitely dig what you have going with your track. i did have to turn my speakers because it was a bit harsh on my ears, but the song it self is nice.
i like the synth in the intro, its very smooth and well done. progresses nicely as well i would just say maybe work on the mixdown a bit

@mthrfnk, your track has a good constant vibe to it. all of the sounds seem appropriate and the melodys throughout are put together well.. the snare is very wet.(im guilty of that as well but i know some people dont like it, just make sure to layer the low end of the snare and keep it dry.)
other than that i would say nice track,i enjoyed the listen.

@divane, i enjoyed the track. i like the structure of it and it has a good momentum to it. when it drops everything is clear but it feels like there is too much going on right then? maybe just tighten up the eq on sounds that are similar so they dont interfere, its just a little bit overwhelming. i wouldve liked a little bit of low end as well :W:
either way nice arrangement.

well, i just posted 2 tunes like yesterday, but ive had a lot of inspiration so the tunes keep coming.
all of the feedback seriously helps a shit load and i take it into consideration constantly, so thank you guys.

heres the new one, i tried to keep it interesting throughout =) lemme know what you think.

@Eye-Sic

Niiicee synths! The bass is a bit too overwhelming for my tastes though
Percussion is spot on
Sample gives that something to the track too, but i would prefer it properly cut up and stuttery
Good basic track

@Kongret

First of all, have to ask, what is complextr-whatthefuckevertransformer
A little too Skrillex for me, though as an original track, youve made a good job
120bpm is always nice, could work in the 125-128 area (or just make a faster VIP of it)
Love the synth at around 2 minutes, + the perc bits during 2:30 or so

@Craggle

Good work!
Hi-hat work, god damn it, so fitting
Some proper straight swagger during 0:54 when the G-funk esque synth kicks in
Keep up man

Now here's my latest, been in a production spree of lately but this is closest to my heart
Not dubstep but who cares

complicated development

Post by Umea » Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:55 pm

hey
in spite of video tutorials, masterclass docs, a huge spectrum of music, the right atmosphere, knowledge about my DAW and hours of experimenting
im really demotivated, uncreative and particularly at the same point i was months ago :D
if you take a look at my track "ayahuasca" https://soundcloud.com/subkontra-1/subkontra-ayahuasca
you will notice that i am able to put effects together, create atmos with pads and so on but in general my producing process is frozen...still
maybe i am impatient but i just want to produce dubstep at least i want to listen to :D
so i got a small project consisting of just 8 bars i think with a little drumbeat and a wobble line, eqs and some effects as well.
everything i made sounds quite rigid even if i make sweeping drums etc. i am not satisfied with my wobs (i think this one is one of my best even if its simple)
and i dont know what to add to get excitement in the tune. i should stop whining :D

http://www20.zippyshare.com/v/92192362/file.html
DAW: Fl Studio 10
Synth: Massive

this is the example project i made... i would be happy if the experienced producers under you would comment, feedback and give me tips.

This one's really nice. I like it. To me, the beat seems a bit to the same for a bit. Maybe change up the drums a bit more. But I enjoy it a lot. :D Nice work. The sub is crisp.

@craggle: Really enjoyed this track. The melodic synth and the chord progression itself are really nice. The snare/clap is very crisp against the softer kick sound, so maybe a little buss compression is in order to tame it a tad. love the funky lead thing tho

@johnkimble: Wow, Really cool track! Love the bass synth and the drum programming is spot on. and the sample is great too. very unique track. Wish it were longer tho. i could see this going on for 5-6 minutes.

@eye-sic: Nice production, i really like the bass sound. The sample is a little naked for my tastes, prefer a bit more sound design on vocal samples.

i think im almost done with this track now. I added a breakdown in the middle that I like a lot, but I still need to make a better ending

Funny, i have done this post not as an Wip but its okay :D okay here we go

@knobgoblin at first i have to say that your bass is quite nice but i thought its just unmastered. There is not really an intro and its quite monotone the whole time so the track loose excitement, but if you concentrate on it and close your eyes its preeeetty amazing what youve done.
in general my favorite parts are the sound effects which boost the atmosphere a lot, the breakdown part and your percs/drums ... sounds realistic and nice.
the distorted bass fits in the complex but I dont really like it that much ... it weight too much if you know what i mean.
for the ending i would stop doing the drums 4 bars earlier and just fade it out or keep one special element alive.

@JayRage hmm i dont know what to say.. i dont like music like this, because it sounds too experimental and the wubs for example arent dominant enough but what i really like are your drum variations... oh boi im headnodding :D
maybe you should add some more bass or a subbassline and not cut the wobbles like this but all in all it sounds quite professional.
maybe your outro could be a bit longer as i say it to knobgoblin too .

@johnkimble your idea is quite nice but i would really commit you to add vocals because i think it would bang the hell out of it with a grimey vocalline or singing like justin timberlakes "bring the sexy back". it sounds like it could be successfull in the mainstream ... ( thats not am insultion)
you should change the hihats as well... or mix them because the hi tone region seems to be more dominant then the other stuff :)

@knobgoblin: nice weird intro, like the panning effects. the kicks/bass are still a little muddy - try eq'ing them and cleaning them out. the cymbals get repetitve quickly, even skipping a cymbal every other bar would liven it up. other than that i dig the weird groove you have going on - its original for sure. as for the ending, i'd suggest withdrawing elements one by one and slowly fading the master too, really draw it out till nothings left.

@JayRage: the drums sound a little weird, mainly the kick - i'd suggest switching them for more punchy samples, they sound almost like midi drums heh. the groove is nice, the drum patterns are well done, overall I think some background synth work would be nice - more swooshes and pads, also adding some wide stereo to the main wubwub midrange might be nice.

@johnkimble: punchy drums on the intro are nice, the vox stabs make the build progress well, althogh they seem panned to the right too much. i feel the main bass could have slightly more saturation/distortion on the top end to crisp it up a little. some synth/key stabs or something similar every now and then would also be nice imo to add a little variation from the same triplets of bass. nice work though.

some bullshit from me, mainly just playing around with stuff, not proper tracks:

@Hadda

I think this track sounds a lot like distances stuff. i love the atmospheric sounds u got in here. the sub is BIGGG, i also really liked the drums in it i think your kick sounds powerful overall a very good track man keep it up

@MthrFnk
Nice tune bro really like it reminds me ov feed me and knife party haha :) i think you have that high pitch synth down to the t it sound BEAUTIFULL :) love your sub man really powerfull and the snare is sooo punchy keep up the good work

@Vyill

I dont really like that kind of music i dont think it goes anywere but i do like your snare, i think u should add more variations into your track and work on your drums more keep it up bro

@KnobGoblin
I love your drums in this, but i think it sounds too monotone it doesnt go anywere i think u should add more variations and maybe work on more "Catchy" synths u need the leads and bass really cutting through but overall good track :)

Hey guys, i dont have a WIP far enough along for some feedback but i thought i would hand some out to mthrfnk and kongret because you guys are always great about giving feedback and honestly i think your tracks deserve it. If it seems like i am saying a lot its because i think they have a ton of potential, i wouldn't waste my time typing up a lot of feedback for tracks i didn't think where very good so please don't get offended! I really hope this helps or at least sparks some ideas in you guys.

@mthrfnk
gave your stuff a listen man. You have been posting on here for a while and TBH your stuff is getting to a point where i am surprised you havent been signed.
->some-house-wip
this is sounding legit man, i would have easily believed this was a deadmau5 wip (and honestly it sounds better than alot of his wips he puts on soundcloud)
->untitled-drop-wip
this one has alot of potential man. Don't get me wrong, it is sounding really good right now - you could call it finished and have a nice track, but i think you could really have something awesome with this with a bit more work. Your drops sound good but tend a bit towards the repetitive side, I think cutting in some melodic riffs with a higher synth (especially on the 4th bars of your drop) would be tight - take a look at the drop in flux's remix of syndicate to see what i am talking about. Just a couple of small things - the vocal rise @1:18 had a few notes in it that seemed a bit out of key. Also the volume discrepancy in the vocals from 1:10- 1:18 seems a bit to noticeable (though sending this to get mastered would probably fix the latter). For your first build prior to the first drop, i would cut everything back to with a lowpass at like 100-200hz at 0:16 and open it towards the drop - ie instead of your waveform looking like >< it would be < (if you get what i am saying). I think it would help bring out your drop a bit more to have that change in dynamics. Also, it might just be a personal thing but i cringe a little everytime i hear a synthetic guitar playing chords - it just always seems SOOOO clear they are fake because the dynamics of a guitar are so heard to reproduce. Maybe that is just me though. Like i said though, this is a really nice sounding track, good work :D.
->in-the-city-more-wip-stuff
You might back of the filter a bit @ 1:00, seems way to noticeable. Your vocal samples at 1:27 seemed a bit out of key to me here as well. I would take down the levels at the beginning of this track to give it some more dynamic range. I think some variations every 2nd or 4th bars in your drop would go a long way as well. This one is sounding pretty nice as well!

@Kongret
Ditto with the above about how your stuff is getting to the point where i think you could be signed, you have some producer chops for sure.

This one is sounding pretty sick man.I might cut down the intro a bit, it seems really well produced but it starts to drag on. The break @0:50 really doesnt seem to have alot of coherence with the rest of the track - it seems to come in off beat, and out of key and at least for me seemed to be a hard stop to the energy you build during the intro. It doesnt really seem to build tension all that well IMO either - that being said your drop is awesome, and i think a different build would probably make it hit even harder. Honestly what would really make this track awesome would be to take the part @1:30 - you have some great sounds here but the arrangement the lead plays falls a bit flat - IMO you need to write a catchy melody part for this (doesnt have to be complex or anything, just a bit catchy), maybe using some of the motifs you use in your intro or drop. Find a chord progression that sounds really good behind it and use those chords @1:00. I would then come in with that melody line for the build (ie start with a lowpassed version and then open up the filter on it - the progression would follow like you already have it, with that first catchy arp coming in after 4 bars then the other coming in after another 4 bars (again initially lowpassed, open up the filter). You definately have the right idea, I just think it really needs an awesome melody part/some chords to drive it home. I would probably use that build for both drops w/ maybe some slight variations between them, or a shortened version for one of the drops. Have you tried pumping this to 128 bmp? Im not sure if it would work but it might give the track a bit more energy as well, might be something to play around with. Again man, this track is sounding really good - its clear you put in some excellent work on it. I really think you coud have something with this one.

GREAT WORK GUYS :W: :W: :W:

Thank you man, means a lot to get decent feedback.

As for not being signed, it's my own fault for not even trying, I haven't finished a full quality decent track in ages. I think it comes down to the fact I'm waiting for that *perfect* track before I start submitting to labels again, last time I did some submissions I got good feedback but most places said the tracks weren't "quite there".
