Thoughts? (Fragment?)
Food for thought: I got my EPM 8 for the cost of a new EPM 6 (250USD). I got a like new mixer that was basically an open box. Used for one out of studio project and sold.
I like SoundCraft and I think the EPM series is probably the best deal going on options for dollar for this style mixer. Yamaha is has some nice ones int he price range as well. Also Allen and Heath Zed and ZedFX series.
The EPM 8 is solid. The sweepable mids let you EQ things pretty well. I use the stereo channels almost exclusively as returns for my FX. Though I have been finding that a lot of my FX actually sound better as inserts in the hardware world. Get yourself some tip/ring y-cables.
I like the pres, usable, I wouldnt say you can really push them. But the add some life to anything your run through them. I think any kind of moderate boosting ends up sounding great. Its not like digital, headroom gets ate up FAST. Been making some Techno ish, House ish, kinda live tweaking pre-programmed arrangements kinda stuff and honestly I think that the mixes just fall together and sound good on this mixer. Havent been worrying much, shit sounds good.
The channel mutes arent as usable as I would like, they are small, crowded next to other controls and unlighted.
I have also been using it as an analog space to design patches with multiple hardware synths combined. If that makes sense. I will sequence something with the Brute, Anode and maybe Der OTO or the Proteus that is meant to be "one patch" and I will EQ , pan, add FX all OTB, hit the pres on the mixer then the master hits the pres on the MOTU 828. Resample into digital.
Getting a lot of mileage out of it. My only bitch is that since with Maschine + 8 audio outs on my interface I want more mono channels. I could easily use another half dozen. But have decided I will just work with the limitations for now as I am saving for a Nord Lead 2x rack unit.
Basically if you are sold on the EPM6 being enough I say go for it. But I would recommend looking around see if you can get a nice used EPM8. Those channels go fast...
