I honestly don't know
I love it I mean what's not to love, it looks visually amazing, it's got that sterile retro-futuristic laboratory style from the first two cronenberg movies mixed with elements of his later body horror stuff crossed with holy mountain, scored by John Carpenter-esque analogue synth
but I have to agree with these reviews from rotten tomatoes:
"Beyond the Black Rainbow" has a doomy, dreamy, druggy, draggy feel that's impressively sustained - until it becomes oppressive, then pointless, then laughable.
The movie looks like it was lit by lava lamps, scored on Moog synthesizers, written between bong hits and acted underwater. None of this is meant as praise.
Oh my god, and the director's dad was the guy that directed Cobra and Rambo II, I thought I'd heard the name before. Unreal!
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.
