Hello WIPs thread... I haven't seen you in a long time.

I suppose I should frequent you more often, you're filled with such lovely and varying things that make my ears feel funny.

Anyway, I have something for you WIPs thread, along with my 3+ pieces of feedback of course.

It's something strange, nowhere near finished yet, and I've no idea what the levels are like because I made it using my laptop and headphones at 2 am; It's a dubstep piece based on some old improvised rhodes parts I found and recordings of strange things I found around my house. It's weird and curious and it makes heavy use of modes and modal interchanges, at times mysterious, at times dark and brooding, at times sad. It's weird and I want to know if it's too weird. So I offer it to you WIPs thread. I hope you don't hate it.

@ mistayif

satin-lace :

I'm listening through headphones so I'm not much use, but through these it sounds really well put together with regards to levels, sounds like what a professional release usually sounds like on these things, minus the finer points of mastering, love the song over all, great percussion and those vocals are lovely, really airy feel to this whole thing, I was kinda expecting the second drop of sub to blow me away, and i expected to be hit with thousands of new features to this tune, then it did the opposite and it worked brilliantly and when it all come together again it was lovely. I don't even have any crit for this, it's just great imo. It's not repetitive or boring in my eyes.

as for funky-ting-wip :

Just gonna crit as I listen, cool intro, nice and bouncy, not so keen on some of the elements in that first drop, some of the notes sound slightly out of key, but it's really well produced so it almost seems intentional, and honestly I think you get away with it (I might be wrong, it's 4.30 am so my ear probs isn't as good as it could be)

when we get to the breakdown at the 3 minute mark, it feels kinda like, you just put it there to split things up, it feels like, you ran out of ideas and you put that there as a sort of place holder till you thought of something better, i think it can be improved upon, some of the sounds when brought out on their own in that section sound a little comical too which contrasts kinda hard with the whole latinish vibe they give off when with everything else in the drops, like the change up at the end, although that swirly build up sound has gotten a little old now.

I'm being majorly picky by the way, I figure better to really hone in on everything I can than just say "cool tune braugh" and leave it at that, these are both great tunes on the whole, so sorry if i sound overly negative, just giving my opinion on bits and pieces that i personally would change around a little. You could probably ignore all i've said and get away with it because like I said, great tunes.

@Ascian

really curious intro, strange mix of sounds, but I kinda like it, that weird vocal bass sound is awesome, drop is great, really strange grimey was gonna say it drags then you altered the drums up, so nice timing on that change up, the piano at the 2 min mark sounds a bit out of place to me :/ and a bit loud too, the end is great, you've done some fantastic work with the percussion in this

@ drake89

Is that a recorder?! Is this the first piece of recorder dubstep ever?! ... There are some cool sounds and ideas in here, and your synths are pretty good, but I think it's a little directionless at times and maybe a little more thought into what sounds would compliment each other would go a long way, musically though all the ideas are on point, there's no jarring or dissonant notes and production wise it isn't half bad. Bit of reverb on some of those pads and pipe parts during the intro wouldn't hurt either to help it all blend together.

@ cosmic surgeon

bass is pretty damn thick, but other than that there's not much I can say about this because it seems like it's just a sketched idea at the minute, there's a little popping sound in there that sounds like something off an 80s duran duran drum kit on a casio key board, it's a bit outta place imo, snare sounds a bit heavily distorted, but i mean i can't tell if that's intentional or not because this thing does have serious retro feel to it, really gritty

@ alexvont12

intro sounds like angry hornets fucking in a burning nest... I think it's a good thing, sounds pretty dark, nice bass sounds and automation, really chunky and crispy and rusty sounding, changing up in all the right places, the snare hits really hard on my headphones though, can't tell if its these stupid headphones or if it's too high, but it's insanely punchy to me and a bit too snappy, like i say, could just be my headphones,

@ MexicanKangaroo

Really nice work, like somebody else said, a little muddy, but other than that good

@ nnny

both are nice ambient pieces, especially the second, has some really nice melodic ideas at times, only thing I'd say is that in both tracks I feel a little swamped by atmospherics at times, like the white noise and stuff, i mean the atmospherics are good, but they feel a little over done to me at times, other than that there's some really nice work gone into these

-------------------------------------------------------------

Gosh I'm tired, I'll get to criting the rest of the page tomorrow.

@obey I love this one, I think that the wobble doesn't really compliment the production in the rest of the track, as it sounds very flat... but I really enjoy this track, it reminds me a lot of rusko <3

@kaiori breathe I'm not on here enough, but from what I've seen your pretty prestigious as a producer, so before clicking your track, I had high expectations, and it's fair to say I was pleased. The production quality of the track is very good, and needless to say the musicality is fantastic as well. Your voicing and melodies really speak out to me and really strike emotion in me, which is fantastic. O_O Very impressed.

@Ascian I'm actually pleased with your use of percussion in this track, and aside from perc. the track is very unique and "odd" (not bad, just unusual) in terms of sound design.. still, I must say I enjoyed the piece.. You can tell it is unmixed though as it is quite loud, still well made.

Soundcloud

Here's something I've been fiddling around with since yesterday. The melody and intro are really not finalized, I just needed to have something to build up to the bass (or mid range rather)... which I synthesized yesterday O_O I'm quite proud of how it sounds so far and if all is well, I will turn this into a full production.. :)

I'm sorry beyond measure for not reading the rules ;-)
so here of course my feedback:

@kaiori breathe: I really like what you did there. The melody and percussion is beautiful to say the least and the occasional pitch bend makes it sound even more original and gloomy. As far as mixing goes i find it really pleasant to listen to, the drums could cut through a bit more, especially the kick. but well...thats just like my opinion...man. Awesome work.

@bevoh: The bass you got going in this track is enormous man. I love how smooth the drums are but the melody before the drop kind of washes out. Even though the vocal sample you use is hella tight I think you use it just a bit too often and it a bit too loud. Finish that thing !

@janke: Really cool! the chillest of vibes you got there. the audio quality seems much worse than this track deserves and theres an ocassional pop behind the mix. Maybe seperate some of the parts a bit more ?

@obey thanks man i finally get some good feedback here :). your track is sounding nice. few things, im not really sure about where the tempo picks up a bit.. personally i would keep that out or change the bass up a lil bit give it some more grunt with maybe a nice sub to complement it or something. and bass at the end i think that formant high end part of it is a bit too prominent. besides that track is sounding real nice.. btw dont take anything i say too seriously as im still a massive nub :)

@andreistephen really like the intro. only thing i can criticise is maybe the short abrupt kinda feel of the drop.. maybe after the vocal give it a slight delay into silence for a second then drop the bass in. each to his own tho and i guess it comes down to personal taste. again... im a massive nub so dont take this too seriously haha.

@mexicankangaroo so we meet again? haha um ur tracks sounding nice but i do agree with the reverb thing and i can see what u mean about it bringing out the sweet spot. Trying turning down the wet just a little bit imo and maybe fiddle with the decay. U played around with a slight delay at all? and by slight? i mean really really obscure just so maybe it hits that sweet spot twice and makes it more apparent? i have no idea if it would work cos again im a massive nub haha but id give it a try just to see. not like it would take much effort.

would love some more feedback on my tune :)

@Tomi: intresting intro, I wouldn't put that section of percussion in with it though.. aspecially if it cuts out before the drop. I'd say it for the drop. It'll increase the wow factor if it all comes toghet I guess. I'm going to be brutal with you and say you should lose the stabs at 0:56. They don't really add much to the track and sound a little out of tune. Other than that, good job! Banger. :)

@ Beh0v: Don't use that vocal sample when the track drops.. bring it in much later. It gets a little monotonous, it's fine at the intro alone. I like that bass, very intresting. Also, use your reverse snare alternately, like.. use a reverse snare before a snare, then the next bar don't... or creat some kind of pattern. Maybe use a reversed cymbal instead. It will add intrest. Snares actually lose a lot of punch if you put a reverse snare infront, so use them carefully!

@Iorek: Nice tune and great bass. I'd take out the melody at the drop and just have bass and drums. You could bring the melody in on the second half of the drop maybe. Love the pads in the middle section, really nice. And great piano. Your kick build up was really nice so welldone on that. I'd also bring your bass up by about 1 or 2 db. It's sitting back just a bit too much. Great track though!

Right here's mine:
I'd really like to know what people think of the mixdown in terms of sub levels/drum levels/bass levels.
Feel free to tell me my bass/drums suck or whatever but I'm afraid I won't be changing them.. I just need second opinions on my mixing.. which I suck at. :L
Thanks guys, really appreciate the help. :)

Filthzilla- Thanks for the great feedback I appreciate it. Fantastic intro I was almost expecting a metalcore song or something. Drums are nicely done. The mixdown actually seems dead on.
I say master it and send it to skrillex's label. hehe :W: great work man.

tomi- I agree the percussion in the intro doesn't really belong. Stabs however could be brought in around 1:24 instead or 0:56 to keep the main part moving/interesting. I do like the bridge around1:17. good job man.

BevOh- this will be interesting to hear when it's finished I'm digging the drop and your bassline but Filthzilla is right after the drop leave the sample out for awhile. good work man I'm ready to hear the rest.

CircuitDNB- interesting piece pretty catchy however the high pitch melody needs to be turned down a few db it's slightly piercing. good work though.

Filthzilla: nice filth, great intro and those drums are awesome. Really like the drum pattern. Maybe a little bit too much for me but I guess I have been going to the more softer side and more neurofunk inspired sound of dubstep these days. Great production overall :)
Iorek: Very interesting, love the female choir in the background. The melody work is cinematic and rich, love it. The drums could be improved, I think the snare could have more punch and click to it and add another kick with some sub on it as layer :) Continue working and doing your stuff, I see potential. :D
AndreiStephen: Intro is very nice and good build up. The vocal is nice! Not too keen on the bass, I think it has a bit too much high frequencies in it, kill some highs on it and it will sound much better. :)

here is my new clip I started on yesterday

#ninthy4

Intro is intresting, maybe not my cup of tea but the sounds are sounding real tight and clean. :) Drop is beastly, KOAN Sound styled with these neuroinfluences and with that highpithced synth. The only thing i would say you could do better is the kick. I think it would fit better with a heavy and steady one. and maybe add some cool percs and hihats in experimental combinations to fill these spaces up?? I'm just thinking... but maybe that's how you like it :-D n1 sam

#Filthzilla

Nice trance influences in that intro. Liking the drums as HELL!! maybe a bit too much reeverb on the snare in my opinion. Drumwork is cool! Drop is filthy as hell. I have nothing to say... well done mate.

#BevOh

hmm... I'm not very much into these kinds of samples. and definatly not that much in the drop. You need a spereate subbas in a low octave beneath your synthlead. put a dist into it to make it more filthy or something!! sounds to weak!!! keep it coming... itäs hard in the beginning.

Was thinking if I could have some feedback on my new remix of "Gimme The Loot" by biggie smalls! feel free to download and to drop a comment on soundcloud if you like it:)

@ mexicankangaroo: i think you have too much reverb going on in this track. the verb on the synth is a bit too much and also on those delayed stabs that come in. their also a bit too loud i think and overpower the rest of the track

@nnny: really like the intro to urban vision, those melodic bells are sick and that eery synth with the high attack in the background fits in nicely. really like the drop aswell, nice and spaced and the bass is sick. i like the transition to the bit where most elements drop out and then the lead to the build up. keeps the track moving nicely

again for the second track, amazing intro. altho maybe a little ott with the reverb and panned delays but they go nicely with the atmosphere. i like that piano melody, but maybe bring in an additional melody at a high octave to complement it? just a suggestion, was expecting a heavy layer of subbass at the drop tho, but still thoroughly enjoyed those 3.46 minutes

@ janke: i'm liking the lofi feel of your drums and percussion, but couldn't help thinking that maybe a 2step beat after the drop would go really well? that vocal sample works nicely with that main synth. think you could do with turning the sub up a bit tho. liking the crackles throughout the track aswell

@ kaiori breathe: safe man, wasn't expecting so much of in depth feedback but thanks. i've always rated your productions quite highly. intro is really good, bit of a wierd one, reminds me of the sort of tunes in a film where someones loved one passes away and they reminisce over their life. i like it tho, percussion is sick, drums are a bit too spaced out for me altho are quite fitting to the overall mood of the track. the only thing i'm not too sure about is the change in key when that string near the end of every 4 bar string melody, but thats just my personal preference, and your right, i have run out of ideas for that funky tune, i want to finish it asap as its starting to bug me now

@ superginger: not sure of a nicer way, but in my eyes, hip hop classics should never be touched and especially shouldn't be mixed with other genres. i can't think of one hip hop tune that has had a good mash up with another genre. the only person who i think would be able to do a decent remix of gimme the loot is pete rock 12 years ago.

anyway, some feedback to your tune, the vocals are a little low and sound very mono while the rest of the track has a stereo feel to it. i like your instrumental. lots of energy to it and that subbass is deadly. i don't really like them gritty wobbly synths but they fit nicely here. can't really say too much about the mixdown, it sounds all good from here

anyway, to those that missed it, here's my one, gonna try and finish it asap and then post up the final version to get some feeds before i mixdown

Soundcloud

cheers

Hey erryone, I've been mia for a while cause i had to tend to my plants and school and such, but I'm gunna start finishing all my wips from before and get back into producing asap.

Bev-Oh: The bass sounds dissonant in a really good way. Its too empty, but thats probably cause its a wip haha. Some high end arpeggiated stuff would sound dope me thinks. The snare sounds good enough for now, I'd focus on building that song up first then go back and decide if you like the snare or not.

Mista: QUALITY sir, well done. I fucking love the subbass in the main part, and the drums groove real well. I don't particularly like the piano part, doesn't go with the rest of the song. Its looking real damn good so far tho :)

Super: This tracks basically done, sounds perfect. I like the square waves but I think it'd sound sick if you mixed squares with some normal waves (like.. square square square square square square WAAAAHHHH WAAAAHHHHH.. if you know what I mean haha). Otherwise, this is some premium quality beat!

Here's the wip I've been working on.. Ignore the extra silence at the end, my bad lol:

@kaiori i really like it! That says alot since I don't even like this kind of dubstep. Only thing I see wrong is that there seems to be distortion on things that would sound beautiful un-distorted
...in my opinion
