Hey people. I'm on of those people pretty early on in their production endeavors and have been wrestling with the HEAPS of, well, stuff, musicality wise for about a year and a half on and off, taking breaks here and there but always having some form of musical idea in mind and trying to hammer stuff out. Recently I've been getting allot more serious about it after reaching a point in learning synthesis/composition/music theory/ other technical stuff so on and so forth that things are really begging to click into place and I'm getting allot more confident with the structure of music creation.

For the past couple of weeks I've been working through a book teaching the fundamentals of composition theory via a lesson by lesson basis (rather than taking the internet detective approach). Its really paid off and while doing the lessons I've been applying the new bits I've learned into a tune I've been making along side (not including) the lessons. See, for ages I've been doing the typical 'interweb self teaching' stuff and watched no end of videos, read forums, guides so on and so forth, (originally into trying to produce DnB but since got heavily into Dubstep more so than i had been before and swung over and never looked back.) But i noticed that in so doing i seemed to have picked up a lot of 'bad habbits' due to bad advice given, taken and regurgitated around the net. I caught the bug of trying to make 'that generic cliche dubstep tune' without realizing thats what i was doing.

So this tune is my step away from 'the norm' for me. a step out of my comfort zone and a fresh approach from a new angle. Just taking it where it 'sounds good' to me and not quazi-automatically pigeon holing myself into the perceived social perspective of what music of genre 'x' should sound like. The results are actually seriously pleasing and i've got the tune to a degree i can link it up in here and get some peoples opinions on where to take it next. Its unfinished and there's allot of room to add new elements to it, but the main content and 'soul' of the track is pretty solidly in place, which is why i think now is as good a time as any to post it up on here.

But first, of course, the complementary feedback :W:

@ kaiori breath :~ I'm absolutely blown away by that track of yours up top. The melody is amazing, and the unique essence to the track really speaks to me. I'm envious! As In my heart of hearts thats the kinda music I'd be making all day every day. I'de love to be able to steal your mystical musical knowledge. I can see there's a lot of room for development with that track as its in its early stages and wish i was in a position to give you some sweet ideas but hell anything i said to you would be preaching to the quire so I'm afraid I'm restricted to showering you with that well deserved praise and a healthy serving of awe. Keep it up! You have a fan :)

@ Obey :~ Interesting use of piano, Got a nice melodic feel goin on there, If i were to give any constructive advice on the track it would be on the Break. The Snare sounds like you've boosted around the 200Hz range too much which makes the snare sort of 'jump' out of the rest of the balance of the track. It also feels a little 'empty'. Try not to over compensate for a lack of temporal content by over processing your individual drum hits. Smoothing out the EQing on the drums then adding a bit of reverb, some really quiet 'mushy' hats pushed back into the sound stage, panned out a bit in the stereo field e.t.c.

@ BevOh :~ Nice use of sample in the beginning and clever use of the rhetoric of the prose to lead into the drop. Saying that it feels like the drop could do with a little more in it try some subtle up-risers or something. The middle of the track is pretty interesting, playful use of 'odd' sounds as bass samples and nice sample sequencing for the full 4 bar bass riff. Keep up that kinda shit man its deffinately a good skill to develop in dubstep production.

------

Wicked stuffs.

Finally, the moment of truth heh. Here's my track. Any and all constructive criticism will by highly appreciated. Ideas on what lil effects to throw in e.t.c. Sometimes different ears get different ideas. Cheers people!

It's called Rainy Days. Reminds me of them :)

@FluidMoShun I can't even say anything about this track except that I like it.. It's crazy and keeps me guessing all the way through

@BevOh Track has a nice build up and the samples used create hostility until the drop, but your drums are sounding pretty weak. It sounds like the limiter or something is suppressing them a bit idk.. anyways i'd look into that

@Turnipish Thoughts I dont about adding any effects to make it different maybe drop the beat out some in the track and make some edits to the break every 16bars or so. dropping out all of the sounds except the melody and adding reverb could make it seem even spacey(er)

Here's one of my works in progress.. Im just hung up on what else to do with this one. Some ideas on different sounds, progression, or anything really would be greatly appreciated

@ BevOh;

Wicked use of the sample, good find, however, it sounded very robotic and rigid and the synth sounds didnt seem to gel, bit too much for my ears. But I would def say carry on mate and work it to something with a bit of a rhythm (Not sure if that's the word i'm looking for). Big up!

@ Turnipish Thoughts;

Really nice vibe, Nice piano work, everything fits together wicked. Would love to hear this when its finished, maybe a one off vocal in there? Ideas, maybe some nice long down-sweeps to break up some changes and a bit more drum editing, oh and maybe something to fill out the intro, hats or something? Last thing, was really quiet, I known its a WIP but I think once mixed down it will bring everything out. Big up!

@ miyan;

I can feel where your trying to go, but tbh it wasn't really long enough to comment on, would love to hear it when its a bit longer. Big up!

Ok, let the pars commence:

Both not far off from being finished.............

@ Bevoh - Try to have the mid muted then turn it back on with good timing (sorry for bad terminology) at some points creating a more shuffle sound... just something to try!!! keep it up though!!!

@ Turnipish Thoughts - I love the melody!!! very chill. Try putting in some tracers. sounds with panning to create more movement.

@ leviticus- Fuck im in love!!!! very sick bad man haha. I really cant complain about to much because im not at that level but you're well on your way. I wish I knew how to create that deep modulation at 2:58

Not up to par with all you guys, but any suggestions on ANYTHING will be greatly appreciated!!!

Why do people nitpick which wips they crit instead of just reviewing the last three wips that posted feedback? :u: :x :x Thanks Miyan for the only feedback I'm probably gunna get, and your tracks pretty chill. Reminds me of some Digital Mystiks kinda dubstep. I like everything so far except the delayed snare hit at the end of each drum pattern, it throws the groove off too much.

@FluidMoShun: very different respect for that, i like it no criticism sounding crisp and it kept me listening till the end without wanting to skip forward which many others do.

@Turnipish Thoughts- i really like this man good job. Im going to have to agree with miyan. i think you should change up that hihat pattern up a bit

@miyan- like the use of the reverse. try adding some throaty pads then perhaps a another ambient sound then change up the reverse sample. i hope that helps

@leviticus- nice use of samples really like this track i dont really find anything that needs fixing other than the act you have the same sounding "wobble" change that guy up btw sounds very shekel. either way well produced!

@The Other Drug - really liked the intro after that not so much great idea but it lacks alot im not really sure i like the wobble. but thats me... it just needs more a very pads something to fill it up.

Here is my tune sort of stuck . The drop 2:40 im a bit iffy on really need suggestions there. Still work on the mix. thanks

Started this earlier today, not sure what I'm gonna do with it at the moment. Probably try and finish it up tomorrow and then maybe make it free download?? Thought I'd get some feedback on it first anyway, hope people enjoy!

@kidstrange - Really liking this one, feels like something I would make lol XD Great atmosphere and love the twinkly melodies in the background. Could be a bit more happening in the intro but after that it's awesome. Amazing breakdown. I think the problem with the second drop is you don't need those twinkly melodies at first. Just have it drop into drums, sub bass and atmosphere. Maybe with a sweep to fill it out a bit.

@the other drug - Not very pleasant to listen to I'm afraid. The melodies are just painful, the drums feel too basic and the mixdown is a bit weird. The wobbles sound waaaay too thin. The sample use is good and the potential is there but at the moment there's not much good I can say about this one I'm afraid :\

@leviticus - Only listened to bad man, sounds like your production is really tight but something felt lacking. The track was unable to maintain any energy. Think you cut the drums too often and when they were playing there wasn't enough happening with them. For this style to work well I feel you really need to have more energy and flow in the track. At the moment it just feels like a step by step sound design showcase but it doesn't feel like a track. I couldn't dance to it. The sound design is on point and the mixdown are really good though.

Paravrais: Love that brass, it has a nice dubby sound and reminds me of Rusko - District Line which is very good :) Very nice sub too, great work!
Kidstrange: Very interesting intro. I think in the 2nd drop it misses something, maybe a brass/whistle melody to make it more interesting, something like in Skream - Rutten or Caspa - Victoria's Secret :) Keep it up!

just an update of my WIP

@The Other Drug: That first track has such an awesome bass in my opinion. Maybe for some parts you could automate the Volume of the Sub behind it to match the wobbles or whatever. Awesome track though.

@Kidstrange: Chilled. Very ambient sounding. I like. The second drop could be a little bit "bigger" than the first one though. If you get what I'm saying. Overall nice track though.

@ninthy4: That bass... damn. The intro also adds a lot to the track. Reminds me of some Broken Note stuff. Nice

@ narrator
damn thats a heavy bass. sounds like datsik. nice 13 seconds mate.

@nilthy
huge track. so dynamic. I want to snatch it up when its finished.

@paravrais
tight grooves. the instrument work is pro. well done on that.

@FluidMoShun
well done using real instruments in this. This one has an impressive groove that would catch anyone's ear. some really crazy sub bass during the break as well. Well done man. Love how it gets dirty in the later 3rd of this track. This tune is great.

Soundcloud

needs a lot of work with the mixing. just wondering if people thought this had flow. :i:

@ Paravrais - 'stairs' is amazing, nothing bad to note at all, loving the trumpets and cheeky grimey bass additions, very nice!!

@ Isley - Lovin the grimey bass man nice work! One thing tho, just to equalize the beat a little bit, there just seems to be too much low and mid, bring out the highs a bit more to make it flow nicely between phrases

@ Danimal - Lovin the idea, reminds me of the old nintendo days! after the second drop though i feel the snare has too much high end maybe just turn down the pitch slightly and then turn down the attack to give it more punch and add a little reverb on it to give it the thickness! Bass is sounded nice aswell!

This is my current WIP...not perfect quality but still needs tweeking...'Elm Avenue'

JL- listening now, intro's really cool i like that. the snare sounds kinda generic, i like the drop. somethings might be a little to high and its covering a little of the emotion you got going on. im all for some heavy ass bass, but it needs to breathe a litle bit every now and then, but i like the style.

narrator- i dig it, you got robo sounds pretty good, would just like to hear it actually in something.

isley- i like the percussion work. its all pretty smooth. im not so sure about the lfo's on the synth when it drops, but thats all preference its really got some groove to it other then that man nice

ninthy - havent even pressed play yet but i expect some killer sounds, and holy shit confirmed, damn drop crunched my skull. your synth work is top notch, im gonna hit you up next time your on mate.

@amphibian: nice atmosphere and drums, love the sub but I felt it peaks a little tho!

@QuantumBeat: I love that intro, good stuff! That subbass is butterly!

@JLproductions: Nice bass sound man!

Here's a clip of what im working on atm, let me know!
