Event Horizon

I watch this one about every two years, mainly because it was one of the last films that sort of scared the shit out of me in theatres when it came out. Mind you, I don't watch regular horror/scare movies a lot, so it might not be that scary overall.
I divert for a second, but I don't see the point in watching movies like 'The Ring' or 'Paranormal Activity': they never keep my interest, usually have paper thin plots and are generally just centred around the startle effect. Utterly pointless. But when there's a broader context or theme, horror can be great fun. Also, Event Horizon is at the fringes, a sci-fi movie, my favourite kind.

The movie was not well received back then, in fact it was a box office failure and a lot of horror fans still look down on it. But it is still, by far and large, the best thing Anderson has done so far and is for me the best 'Haunted House Sci-Fi Horror flick' made and all subsequent attempts pale in comparison (sunshine, pandorum...). I'm glad it has gathered at least a limited cult following nowadays.

Visually, Event Horizon was way ahead of its time: the design is gothic and religious, dark and yet quite good looking for its time (also the colours are awesome). The premise of the movie is simply awesome: like Alien it instilled a picture of fear of the unknown, only less tangible (but unfortunately overly religious as well). Sam Neill and Lawrence Fishburne deliver great performances as well.
Unfortunately, the horror scenes are largely cliché (though I liked the homage to the Haunting). Some of the characters are flat and superfluous (like the joking black dude, the sinister doctor, the protective mother figure...). And a lot of the interesting scenes were not included because Paramount demanded a lower PG rating so more people would be allowed to see this (stupendous for a horror space-flick...). A Director's Cut would undoubtedly have produced a better movie, but all source footage was apparently destroyed by Paramount after filming (DVD / Blu-Ray extra features were not yet on their mind...).

But it's not a bad movie: Again, the opening dream sequence is as thrilling and terror inspiring as Alien. The revolving space station around Earth rivals 2001 in terms of realism and awesomeness. The Space-ship is well designed and the colours used in the film are awesome. The story is simply a good concept, albeit too religiously worked out. And although most of the horror scenes were utterly cliché, there was some genuine fear in the movie. The sound track even has Orbital on it so that's not too bad either.

It is not the success that it could have been, but it certainly defines a micro-genre (the Haunted House Space-flick) and is overall an underrated movie just shy of becoming a true cult classic over time.

so i just watched part 1 of the hobbit
it's a good movie
but fuck jackson is trying too hard to make it lord of the rings
the 70s cartoon is better
jacksons adaptation added too many side tolkien stories and makes scenes too fucking long which is his style

John Dies At the End
Not as good as the book (obviously), but damn good for an indie flick.

watched Looper - was good, but I was expecting more of a chase action movie I suppose.

Yea the trailers were misleading, it was a good flick and at some point you just start to ignore the plotholes and enjoy it as a mindless sci fi flick.

Red State was so so, good for a Kevin Smith flick.

They're great for comedy indie flicks, definitely made for film fans.
Red State was a departure from his usual style.
His old flicks remind me of old Peter Jackson movies like Dead Alive, Meet the Feebles, Bad Taste.
They're full of juvenile humor excessively but great movies.

Yea Kevin Smith is known for his dialog and comedy, Red State was him trying to make a horror flick and was a damn good attempt.
It was his first deviation from comedy.
