Will dubstep split into new genres?
Re: Will dubstep split into new genres?
IMO I think we may be finally over the whole genre sub genre thing. Certainly I think there will still be people trying to hang on to the old days, the internet won't let anything die peacefully. But yeah I like the idea of post genre electronic music. You will sit down in your studio and write whatever the fuck you feel like instead of what fits the labels/dj's/clubs agenda. I think where djing is going is aiding this transition too. More laptops and less turntables. Whether you like it or not that is what I think is happening. Personally I think exciting times are ahead for electronic music or even music in general when this happens.
Oh I forgot to mention I am looking ahead 10 years here as someone suggested I do.

i think the whole notion of genre is going to die off eventually. i think now with serato, the ipod's influence and the changes in the way people find out about music (twitter/soundcloud/youtube).....are setting things up for profound changes in the next decade. this is the era of the "playlist". album sales are down across the whole industry. single sales are way up and breaking records. everything has become about personal preferences and choices today, whereas the radio dj and record store had total control for over 5 decades previously.abZ wrote:IMO I think we may be finally over the whole genre sub genre thing. probably 80% of the people out there with mp3 players are listening to several genres in the course of a day. the whole spectrum of bpms and feels. this is especially true of the generation thats around 15 right now, that grew up with the mp3 player during this decade. they don't know anything else at this point.

Okay, now!
I am a journalist and a writer, so Joe, if you wanted a science fiction - here we go.
But i'm a shitty English speaker so.. Anyways, i see future like this - people evolve, mutate into superbeings WITHOUT any physical changes. The main thing in being a superbeing is the collective thinking that will develop. The way of wars, the way of suffer, all of this things will kill humanity. The way of peace and PARTNERSHIP will keep it moving forward. Society will become something in the first place with people smiling in the first place, to each other. Splits and differences always cause wars and destruction - there is nothing constructive in being the best on your own. If you will write a best tune ever made, but nobody will (or will be able to) listen to it - you are a sad fuck.
SO. In Dubstep. And in Wonky, for example (dont beat me for the name) i see something new. This superability to have this ULTRAGENRES is something very novel and new. Dubstep is an ulltragenre, and basicaly - a hypergenre. So its genre of genres. The defining and ultimative one. Dubstep is THAT good (and we are all here today on that reason) becuase its so different and so diverse. There is something for everyone in it. There are no borders and boundaries in dubstep, only bpm around 140 thats all (even though this track speed also not define anything) so as Seckle said earlier (listen to this man he is like from day one on here) as long as people will be coming onto gigs and nights ALLTOGETHER not knowing what to expect its a way to go. So in the future there are no more genres - kick drum should be here and sound like this, snare should be like that in here, also bass like this and synths like that - ok we have a minimal psy trance now. This kick this snare and this sounds will make it heavy death metal! No such bullshit!
Look at Wonky. Its a new Hypergenre! Nothing defys it. Only 8 bit tembres, some synths fuckery, overall wonkyness and samples beign placed "wrong" on what is known as musical conventions (i.e. unquantized). And here we go. We can have hip-hop like this, we can have dubstep like this. Every genre could be affected by this mixture of funny things making it wonky. And its like a virus.
I will quote Jace Clayton here (a man also known as DJ/Rupture) who is also behind, as i believe, spreading of the Dubstep hypergenre virus somehow:

I belive Kode 9 - the man who is behind one of the greatest things in what we know Dubstep and in this new music of today may be agree with this hypergenres and ultragenres theory, namig his label Hyperdub. So future is in something like this, bringing people together, pushing thing forward with people who heard of to say Skream, typing 'Dubstep' in youtube search could also be linked to the acts like Burial or Darkstar - which are on their own the acts of real beatiful musial art.... a trans-generic mutational agent, spreading seamlessly between bpm species, liquidating textures, distending rhythmical consistency ...

in my opinion, thats what it should stay likeDJ music is now the common art form of squatters and the nouveau riche; it is the soundtrack both for capital and for its opposition

Re: Will dubstep split into new genres?
i agree with you in most of your thinking.
it's limitless, it's MUSIC
you have people like LeBelgeElectrod, making very MUSICAL "brostep"...... there's a concept
as far as the evolution of dubstep is concerned, it will evolve in EVERY possible direction, not just the "funky", or "wonky", or "dubby", or..... whatever
listen to Bassnectar, this dudes playin around with tempos like 200+bpm, and if you ask me, a lot of it is still dubstep.
what i would personally like to see is the most innovative sounds in trip-hop or glitch like, IMO, bassnectar, glitchmob, mochipet, illgates, ect., combined with the most innovative sounds in dubstep, combined with the most innovative sounds in hip-hop
I WANT MID - FAST TEMPO BASS HEAVY GLITCHED DUB HOP ******MUSIC***** (not just 3 note tracks)
i may be too tired and young (sorry im just 20
) to give an answer that will suffice for you older heads, but what im seeing is the actual SOUND of the music, the synths, if you will, evolving with the technology.
it's been mentioned that tempo will be less of a factor as dj equipment evolves, but the same must be said for overall sound.
as the software evolves, this will open up new possibility in sound experimentation entirely, thus spawning even MOAR "sub-genres'
personally, right now, im into the "brostep" if my understanding of this term is correct.
im loving the robotic sounds that ppl like cookie monsta, trolley snatcha, funtcase, excision, datsik, ect are putting out.

id say its already split but aint named just yet. well not properly anyways.
dnb was like, jungle and drum n bass but now its like a million different types and dubstep is experiencing the same kind of element.
not a bad thing in my opinion

I believe there isn't going to be no struggle - it will happen completely by itself!deamonds wrote:I think the newest genre will struggle to match the presence that dubstep had when it was first realised, that confidence, that 'new' feeling.
What I would want to hear from "next step", is 150bpm beats with 2005 aesthetics. And later on maybe even 160bpm!! Y'know, going back to jungle, but this time without breaks. Increasing tempo doesn't necessarily have to mean midrange stuff (though it will...).
Re: Will dubstep split into new genres?
I do sincerely believe that the use of computers for production but more importantly performance is gonna take bass music in general to a whole other level that we can't possibly imagine. all of this "vinyl forever!!! down with serato! down with ableton!" hate mongering will fade away, and then people will full on grab digital performance by the nuts and say "take me to the next level"
2010-2020 is gonna be NUTS
and as I make this myself, I'm all for a 150-157/8 bpm dominated sound.

There will always be genres, and people will always have preferences to certain sounds and styles.

I asked people to use their imagination and project into the future. Nobody can say what IS going to happen in the future, but they can say what they think MIGHT.akindele wrote:No offense meant on my part at all to both of you, but this sounds very pie in the sky.seckle wrote:i think the whole notion of genre is going to die off eventually. i think now with serato, the ipod's influence and the changes in the way people find out about music (twitter/soundcloud/youtube).....are setting things up for profound changes in the next decade. this is the era of the "playlist". album sales are down across the whole industry. single sales are way up and breaking records. everything has become about personal preferences and choices today, whereas the radio dj and record store had total control for over 5 decades previously.abZ wrote:IMO I think we may be finally over the whole genre sub genre thing. You think genre divisions as we now them are going to continue: why is that? And what kind of genres do you invisage in the future?

Here's where dubstep is going: too many ppl talking about it rather than making it. Rather than trying to figure where ppl think its going why don't we all take it where we want to...
But then again Im on hear talking about it lol so I have no bitching room. Cheerz
