That's simply not true, if someone is connected to the stream they are connected to the stream end of story.
Doesn't mean there isn't something else influencing the number shown after the maths have been done. Maybe a simple case of adding 100 to the final result which wouldn't suprise me or the fact actual people are even connected. Could be some screen sessions somewhere on a server with multiple IP's.
The site above on the other hand has an audience of about 50,000 families who log every TV and radio show they listen to and then they work out using smart methods and ratios to approximately work out how much else of the UK is watching.
the way to gather stats is completely different than reg tv and FM broadcasts.. the only way to gather stats on those is to either have people answer a survey or have a number of people use special boxes that send usage of what they are watching, then they can estimate from that.... there is no way to tell of someone is tuned into a FM radio station or a TV broadcast other than that.. that i know of...
with internet radio or any internet broadcast, every listener that connects can be tracked because its an open connection to the server.. i can see the IP, hostname, how long youve been connected, what sofware your using to connect, if you have had any buffer under runs, etc, etc
the server also counts 'unique' connections.. which means it knows the difference between when there are 40 people behind a firewall all using the same ip or not.
all my stats readouts use the 'unique' connected figures... so in all reality, im sure there are people that tune in from behind firewalls.. which i dont count.. so really... we most likely have MORE listeners that what i publish.... counting the unique numbers also prohibits false reporting or the manipulation of the figures... makes it so someone cant tune in 30 times from the same host.
look at the shoutcast status page.. which counts EVERY listener connected to the server.. it also shows how many unique connections there are..
this page is generated by the server, there isnt a place that i can edit the html code or anything...
like i said.. its pretty cut and dry
