That's simply not true, if someone is connected to the stream they are connected to the stream end of story.
Doesn't mean there isn't something else influencing the number shown after the maths have been done. Maybe a simple case of adding 100 to the final result which wouldn't suprise me or the fact actual people are even connected. Could be some screen sessions somewhere on a server with multiple IP's.

The site above on the other hand has an audience of about 50,000 families who log every TV and radio show they listen to and then they work out using smart methods and ratios to approximately work out how much else of the UK is watching.

who is auditing the dubstep.fm stats? how do you know that those listeners are locked in for a whole show? someone could be locked in for 5 mins. how do you know what ip's are proxies and what ip's are real?

if you're going to publicly promote your listener stats, that means you're publicly willing to have them scrutinized. the bbc know its not a perfect science. this is why they don't publish un-audited stats.

the way to gather stats is completely different than reg tv and FM broadcasts.. the only way to gather stats on those is to either have people answer a survey or have a number of people use special boxes that send usage of what they are watching, then they can estimate from that.... there is no way to tell of someone is tuned into a FM radio station or a TV broadcast other than that.. that i know of...

with internet radio or any internet broadcast, every listener that connects can be tracked because its an open connection to the server.. i can see the IP, hostname, how long youve been connected, what sofware your using to connect, if you have had any buffer under runs, etc, etc

the server also counts 'unique' connections.. which means it knows the difference between when there are 40 people behind a firewall all using the same ip or not.

all my stats readouts use the 'unique' connected figures... so in all reality, im sure there are people that tune in from behind firewalls.. which i dont count.. so really... we most likely have MORE listeners that what i publish.... counting the unique numbers also prohibits false reporting or the manipulation of the figures... makes it so someone cant tune in 30 times from the same host.

look at the shoutcast status page.. which counts EVERY listener connected to the server.. it also shows how many unique connections there are..

this page is generated by the server, there isnt a place that i can edit the html code or anything...

like i said.. its pretty cut and dry

rajar uses "diary" data, made from real people that document their listening usage. rajar is the industry standard in the uk for most of the largest radio and web radio markets. the bbc also hires abce to further scrutinize their stats, so that the margin for error is as good as it can be.

no ones accusing you of falsifying info. i'm saying that theres no way that any of these stats are 100% accurate or facts. there's too many variables and you don't have them audited.

You are running these on linux.

You probably downloaded the source code and compiled it yourself giving you the opportunity to meddle with the source code.

Isn't hard to find out where the HTTPd within Shoutcast lives that serves these dynamically generated data.

jesus christ dude.. are you for real?

is it really that hard to believe?

the pages are generated by the server.. there is no http files to edit its one file.. sc_serv and a config file.. sc_serc.conf

its NOT open source, and i wouldnt have the slightest idea on how to edit or even get to those pages.. ive tried it before because i wanted to customize the way it looked and i have no idea..

have a look at this

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=2333589

and this

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php ... did=263222

and this

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php ... did=119146

and just to make my point even more.. here are the actual screenshots of the server status pages.. which includes a list of every person that is connected.

http://www.dubstep.fm/images/sc_serv/relay1.png
http://www.dubstep.fm/images/sc_serv/relay2.png
http://www.dubstep.fm/images/sc_serv/relay3.png
http://www.dubstep.fm/images/sc_serv/relay4.png

here is the shoutcast directory listing... the server sends the data to shoutcast.com and shoutcast.com displays how many people are tuned in...there is no way for me to falsify that data.

http://shoutcast.com/Internet-Radio/dubstep.fm

i also have rrdtool polling the stats..

http://www.dubstep.fm/stats/stream

oh yea.. i also move a hell of alot of data from my archives and shit too...

http://www.dubstep.fm/stats/web/all/

yes thats 800GB+ a day in data transfer

and what about stations that have way more listeners than me?

http://shoutcast.com/

take a look at that.. thats thousands of listeners.. im small potatoes when it comes to some stations... but a dubstep only station? i have the most dude... deal with it.

and no i didnt compile this myself.. they are pre-compiled.. go ahead and see for yourself

http://yp.shoutcast.com/downloads/sc1-9 ... nux.tar.gz

if you still dont believe me.. go fuck yourself..
