I think this whole debate is like this now:

Actors do stuff because it pays fucking well and they want a nice lifestyle. They might then do a couple of low budget, arthouse films which are of interest to them because they've just got paid. In fact, they probably cut their teeth doing artistic stuff, get recognized, and (hopefully) get noticed by someone big with whom they can collaborate and make dat chedder. I think there are parallels with the music biz.

Chatus' collabs with Snoop Dogg, Rhianna and their current 'commercial' output are not for me. It is basically everything I don't like about dance music. It's dull, it's over-produced, it has lots of 'special effects'. it's great if you're off your tits on tablets. I done that before, to better music. I'm not interested in neon-sporting Skins extras making gunfingers in my face and talking jafaikan at raves, as it seems most Chatus fans are and do (massive generalization :6:) . All in all, their current stuff is like a hollywood action film - all steroided up, and nowhere to go. Like Saxon, Madhouse, Eastern Jam. Not my thing.

However, I love Top Shotta :
<iframe src="/forum/video.php?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oK__CUmios" frameborder="0" style="overflow:hidden; height:auto; max-width:540px"></iframe>

and i love wise up and i love tricky:

<iframe src="/forum/video.php?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj1eB24J0B4&feature=PlayList&p=E34827A6B177DAEB&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=12" frameborder="0" style="overflow:hidden; height:auto; max-width:540px"></iframe>

drum and bass wise they made this which is dope:

<iframe src="/forum/video.php?url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J-OP5evJt8" frameborder="0" style="overflow:hidden; height:auto; max-width:540px"></iframe>

so they're not bad producers. they do have talent.

their 'commercial' output leaves me cold, but you know who else in this thread is stacking pees?

They must be doing this either for money or for enjoyment or both. I might not like it artistically, but for them it's a banker no doubt.

They are top producers - this was obvious in their 'more than alot' album

but if they wanted to produce a dubstep track for her they should have done it completely dubstep

and if they wanted to do pop or R&B they should of done that, not some imbetween stuff

Ray Kroc, founder of McDonald's, had a lot of talent too.

Timbaland is the Ray Kroc of beats. He's been around for a long time, made lots of money, and his work is everywhere, but the people he mainly influences are wannabe moguls who are more interested in making money than a memorable, quality product.

Don't expect to impress people who know a lot about music by dropping Timbaland as one of your favorite producers. That's like saying McDonald's is your favorite type of food. Fine, that may be the case, but you should keep that shit to yourself.

Timbaland did that "Sexy Back" song for Justin Timberlake right? Need I really say anything else?! He's a fully grown-ass man singing "Get your sexy on!" and you think this is acceptable???? I thought the problem was contained to this country, it saddens me it is not.

He makes flaccid, FM-friendly beats for prepubescent, suburban Americans. I hate all new music on today's FM radio. It is all shit.* Be thankful you non-Americans actually celebrate taste and culture in your countries in lieu of conformity and marketing techniques.

* I had to edit this for posterity - there are some good indie & college radio stations out there

Isn't that vocal line sung by Timbaland?

Sorry, I'm not going to give it another shot, it might make me throw up a little and I can't do that at my cubicle.

I still accidentally hear it at least once a month. When it first came out I would hear it every freakin day and I don't even listen to the radio! Whether somebody is blasting it from their car, playing it in a store, bar or club, whether someone has MTV on in their apartment, its freaking everywhere. Like air. Or Starbucks. Or McDonalds... I'm sticking with my original analogy: FM radio = fast food.*

*unless you are not in the U.S.A. and they might actually have diversity on your airwaves. Do you wankers even realize how lucky you are to have something like Mary Anne Hobbs and Radio1?? She is a British national treasure. Her show would NEVER fly here on a network station here, way too uncommercializeable and good.

Hey, just wanted to clarify... I hope ur not referring to my post, cuz I didn't mean to come off as I'd put Timbaland as one of my fav producers. Maybe I would consider it, if he had kept the vibe he had in the 90's/early 2000, but like I said, I don't agree with the stuff he has put out in the past few years. I don't even like any of the tracks off his latest album.
For hip hop producers, I'd put Stoupe, J-Zone as top in my favs (followed by Primo, Large Professor, Pete Rock, RZA...). I still won't deny Timbaland's skill though... the man knows how to make beats and he's versatile, having produced such a wide range of sounds. That's the point I was trying to put across.
Anyways, this is just a matter of personal taste :)

Cheers

Just to clarify - while Radio1 does have some great underground programming, for most of the day it still plays the same crap you are complaining about. Not only does Radio1 play a lot of the American top40 stuff, they also play the British equivalent (N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder, etc). It also should be said that Radio1 is the exception to the rule here as well. There are plenty of stations that play garbage 24/7.

Sounds like you are over-romanticizing a bit.

God forbid not impressing people who know a lot about music, I didn't realise it wouldn't impress those godlike beings who know sooooooooooooooo much about music, next time someone asks me what producers I rate I'll have to check how much they know about music and then maybe ask you what level they are at and what names will impress them. I'll devise a little questionaire and everything.

Also maybe next time a really good dj drops a Timbaland production in a set, you know, someone like Rustie or Plastician or Hudson Mohawke or someone like that, I'll have to tell them that they aren't impressing people who truly know about music and to fix up and fuck off.

Thanks for setting me straight.

My pleasure! Glad I could help.

If even just 1 person stops listening to Timbaland and Justin Timberlake because of my posts I will know my work was not in vain.

I've written rants and rants against Timbaland, suffice to say I'm anything but a fan of his post 2K output and think his instincts trend towards wattery pap in the worst way...

...that said he's a talented musician and plenty of great producers owe a massive debt to his late 90's material with Aaliyah/Ginuwine/Missy. I can't imagine Joker/Gemmy/Guido tunes sounding the way they do without him. Maybe I'm wrong but...

Also, this is about one hundred trillion times better than Rusko's track on the Kid Sister album and this is coming from someone who likes his fair share of Rusko tunes. http://awe.sm/15WJ7

I listened to at least part of every Timbaland YouTube video that was posted on this page and I am not wavering in my convictions. His beats are catchy, and that's all. He's got a great talent for creating safe, clean music that is easily accessible.

I am sorry for disrespecting peoples' personal tastes but I would argue he is not nearly as influential in dubstep as y'all are giving him credit for, and I don't have to admit he's "dope" or give him respect or props. He is doing quite well without them.

And sorry but I've never actually heard anything by Rustie. Timbaland is more influential to Kanye West and whatever cheesy, generic and boring offspring follow from that than he is to dubstep as a whole.

Do you guys also like Kanye West? If so, we live on different planets, but at least dubstep is commonly enjoyable enough to bring us together so we can bitch about being alive in a non-destructive fasion.
