Kind of skim read it....

But....can't believe no one's mentioned Oshii's Patlabor films.

They're pretty seminal in my view. The soundtrack by Kenji Kawai (GITS) is very graceful. The third installment wasn't up to much though...

Anyone seen Tenshi No Tamago (Angel's Egg)? Utterly baffling but haunting to watch...

There's a Nissin Cup Noodle extended commercial with character design by Otomo - anyone know about a western release for this?

I used to be very much into NGE, but, with hindsight, I can't help but think that a). Shinji is a whining little shit, and b). that Anno's mythology is actually full of holes. It seems like he kind of cobbled it together. I know that they ran out of time/money for the series ending, hence the 2 movies. But even they seemed to be a bit all over the place.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the majority of anime in Japan runs into the same problem that Lost, X-Files types run into in the west, i.e. that once they prove popular they get money thrown at them to make thm run ad infinitum (or at least until they fall out of favour with the fanbase). As such they lose a decent story thread. A really strong argument in favour of this is Death Note. I haven't seen all of the anime but I've read all the manga and the ending, whilst realistic, was just weak when compared to the opening half of the book.

This is all of the cuff though - I'm happy to be proven wrong though (i'm sure I am ) - any thoughts?

tbf as manga goes thats always been one of the top of the boys!

very dark... one of the weirdest new yrs i ever had deciding we would watch the whole series...

but for weird stuff (not neccesarily anime)

I'm actually quite ashamed I didn't mention Patlabor 1 + 2. Masterpieces. 2 in particular has some of the best comments on society/politics/international relations/war I've ever heard in a film. Profound stuff that rings true especially in modern times. For anyone that hasn't seen them, be warned, you can't switch off for a second, the dialogue/plot development is near constant. Yeah, the music is also superb Kawai stuff, especially that in 2, hauntingly beautiful stuff.

Kind of agree with you on Death Note (i'm on episode 22 at the mo), it started out so serious and was compulsive viewing but has got really unbelievable and has taken on a stupid goofball comdey vibe. Will watch through to the end though, i rarely watch series halfway then give up.

I thought Paprika was ok. Stunning visuals but was encumbered by too much waffle and not enough explanantion of things you give a damn about (like the connection with paprika/how she came to be). Millenium Actress and Perfect Blue are Kon's greatest works.

Which remind me....VON, if you like violent/erotic anime you have to check Elfen Lied. It's easily in my top ten anime series ever. It's violent as anything and has so many WRONG things in it (I won't even say) but is so DEEP at the same time.

I've got it in on the HD to watch at some point

Basically a girl who finds a way to jump back through time relives a weeks worth of her life, trying to fix things that go wrong but usually messing things up. A bit like Groundhog Day...but Japanese, and in secondary school. The character expressions/movements/voice acting are sick, the scenery/cinematography is top class and it's genuinely funny and likeable. There's a sub of it put together by 'Sonar' which is really good quality. One of the best anime movies of recent years imo.

SPOILER - In the suicide pact episode, there's a scene that was deemed too close to the bone for western audiences, given the subject matter. Actually, the scene is available on youtube.

It's not violent or horrific or anything like that, but it does serve to highlight differing cultural attitudes to suicide.

As an aside: In the Heath Ledger thread there was a mini-debate about the ethics of suicide. It got me thinking that any debate in this subject ought to include the Japanese way of looking at things (i.e. that suicide can in fact be viewed as an honourable way to die).

Anyway, VON sounds fun, but I must say that I'm tending to lean away from the more gratuitous anime these days. Don't know why exactly, but I can't help but feel that most of it is designed explicitly to shock. The violence/gore isn't really a part of the story - more that the story is part of the violence/gore. Sort of like the Eli Roth films et al I suppose.

Glad you like Patlabor Mr. Vision. They truly are quite indelible films. I have the P2 soundtrack on CD! So so good! Better than GITS imo! Also, did you see Jin Roh? I only watched it once and that was ages ago....

Like datura, i'm kind of out of the loop. I've been concentrating on old Japanese live actions. Have you seen Teshigahara's The Face Of Another (他人の顔, Tanin no kao)? Very sparse and minimal but full of visual archetypes. Eureka films have done a really good job of re-packaging and making available quite a few Japanese oldies from that era. Kwaidan, again, contains some images that just wouldn't come from anywhere else but Japan.

Also - do you know about the spate of cyberpunk live actions that were released in the wake of Tsukamoto's Tetsuo? Check Shozin Fukui's Pinocchio 964 as a starting point. Not the most cerebal of films it has to be said, but extremely visceral:
