FFS LISTEN TO THE MUSIC YOU LIKE AND QUIT CARING WHAT OTHERS THINK. I just saw rusko last week in the Bay Area, and I plan to hit up DMZ next year in the UK. People like what they like, don't what they don't, haters gonna hate, so fuck 'em.

Ya, word, and after re-reading the OP I realize that a bit more

Bit more on topic...

I can see where the OP is coming from, especially being from the US (although it seems his location is a bit of an exception?). Where I'm from, all the dubstep parties are all tear out, all the time, and if dubstep was only what was talked about on DSF, the stuff they play here straight wouldn't exist. So stylistically, maybe a bit disconnected. But, the RL dubstep wouldn't exist for what DSF started.

I am from Europe :D I guess what I meant was that some dubstep is best just in your ears only, then other is best in a big crowd going nuts. Shambhala looks awesome though.

this. i would rarely listen to things from rottun or circus etc at home, but a set of datsik's that i saw was a fuckin amazing time. i think if people here were honest, there would be more saying they enjoy that type of dubstep.

i reckon the disconnect stems from the vocal few on this forum who make no room for the tastes of other people. this squashes a lot of discussion on forms of dubstep which seem to be more popular in real life.

a side note: distance coming to new zealand this week. seen him once before and it was the best set i've ever seen, so im fucking amping :D

From what I gather, the majority of the US has latched onto one style (sub-genre as you put it) of Dubstep....with very little variation in style (even though there are some amaaaazing producer in the US)..and I for one, don't think that is a positive.
nail on head.

memphis where u at? let us know.
im moving to memphis next week. bringing out all the old vinyls. would love to bring a headier act to one of the smaller venues.... beale st dubstep?

as far as extant 'steppers there's one guy who posts here "youre_strooly" ... he seems to have switched over from electro to brostep about 4 months ago.... couldnt properly beatmatch house in traktor in may tho....

also cytosine seems to be a high school kid with relatively legit beats ....awkward and wobbly but at least large in scope.
hankerins wrote:I currently go to Brown University where Diplo performed this Spring for our end of year concerts. The 'brostep' portion of his set definitely turned a lot of kids onto dubstep in general, and I noticed that lots of students who never knew the genre were talking about it, playing it at parties, etc. after his show. It's not perfect, but now when I DJ parties there I at least get to play some kind of dubstep, even it is mostly Datsik/Flux Pavillion/Doc P et al. and sometimes I can mix in something more far out. So yea, the US scene is all about the party/rave style of dubstep right now, but imho thats better than nothing.
you need to get yourself out to Dubwar!!
sofa_king wrote:diplo always spins nuff dubstep, it's usually pretty good. it would be pretty dumb if he started playing "Anti-War Dub" all of a sudden. everything has its place. dont pay attention to labels.
tbh it doesnt matter what genre diplo is playing...he always draws for the most vapid and uninteresting beats imaginable.

Exactly, people seem to like to keep themselves to one sector (can't think of another word for it) of dubstep. For me, I reckon a DJ or even Burial himself playing his own songs would be a bit bland. In a live venue I'm sure we are all here to just enjoy ourselves and not just standing or occasionally swaying and nodding (is that how you "skank" to Burial? idk). Excision is coming to UK in October but I'm up in Scotland where dubstep artists seem to neglect (aside from Magnetic Man who are in Glasgow at the end of October).

This is quite true but as well as Magnetic Man, Benga, Caspa is playing with Emalkay and Chase & Status (not necessarily dubstep) are playing with Nero, so there's a few coming up! :)

Never could understand why people say they can't dance to burial... Is the beat too complicated or are they really uncoordinated? Or do they actually mean pogo and mosh when they say dance? I am confuse

I had alcohol all weekend at shambhala. Its frowned upon but you can easily get it in. Really good festival with the most awesome sound system.

I just can't see folk dancing to it, it's all murky and (a majority of it is) not very upbeat.

^

What the OP has said is very interesting... I guess since this is an underground forum the full spectrum of tastes is present, but when you get to a big gig and mass appeal ,it's mainly the more "hyped" stuff that gets out there. I don't really think it's a problem, as in most places (like hear in melbourne) you can find what you want, it might not be every weekend, but there is something for everyone. I don't think there's any point being upset because some people only know dubstep as Datsik etc.

you could be the biggest reggae collector in your country, go to every reggae website you can find, go to every reggae dance in your area....but you won't understand reggae until you've been to jamaica, and walked those streets.....eaten roast fish from a street vendor.....been to a few soundsystems. same with new york and hip hop. same with country music and nashville.

when a certain sound gets under your skin, you go as close as possible, to the kitchen where it came from.
the internet will never provide that experience for you.
that was great...

This is true of everywhere in the world,
IN MY OPINION. (which, to most here I'm sure isn't really worth shit at this point.)
Everything is different where ever you go. I've always thought, "imagine all of the music I'd be able to get down to if I understood every language?"
When I was in London I could feel the underground. Everything seemed like, if you don't already know about it you aren't meant to know.
Where as in America everything spreads like HIV because everyone's so down to be "cool"
The thing is anything that you can get involved in has a different way to enjoy it. Joining this forum definitely, confirmed this for me. Most people on the internet are concerned about dubstep being "REAL" dubstep, they seem so picky about what they listen to. That's all good and dandy to me, I just like music, I'm very open minded. The first thread I ever posted was about Boregore, that was the only artist I knew by name. I've had countless hours of dubstep listening, but the only thing that I could remember was that all these bitches wanna lick my ice cream. So I go home, research that, and now I'm here. The reply's I got were nasty and rude. Clearly, I don't give a fuck since I'm still here. And a few people PM'd me and linked me a bunch of songs. Every single one of those songs were different, and every person had a different thing that I "ABSOLUTELY HAD TO HEAR"
So when I was listening to it, and I didn't like some of it at first I felt really stupid. That was until I found songs that I did like, and I realized that if all you guys are allowed to like what you like that I'm going to like what I like and I'm going to listen to it.
It doesn't matter where you're from it's just who you are.
But you're right, it's ten times gloomier here than it is in real life.
