great topic. things are changing, the entire idea of 'owning' music is becoming obsolete in some ways - in a couple of years I reckon the predominant mode of listening will be streaming via spotify-like services direct to your phone/computer/whatever.
...which sucks, really. my personal favourite is vinyl with an mp3 backup. so you have your digital files if you wanna throw it on your ipod or whatever, but the vinyl's still there for posterity and for quality listening time. i really have a problem with the physical format dying, i think because fundamentally i hate playing music through a computer, it seems so distracting: i love just dimming hte lights, switching off the computer/phone, and putting a vinyl on. sounds wierd cos most dance music essentially relies on that technology to make it but i think it distracts away from the listening experience, it encourages a more 'shuffle' mentality where you judge a tune in the first second or two then skip to the next...
lot to be said for taking time out to listen to your music. if wavs/mp3s allow that, sound, but i know they dont for me

One of the handles on my shitty plastic record crate finally broke from the weight when i was hauling it out of a friends car. it was a milestone for me. im 21. play vinyl, even started getting acetate cut (neither of these things are really cheap when you live in nz) but who cares, they are my babies.

I just started selling out of my mp3 collection... it is great money, and the best thing is that I still got almost everything in stock!

^ You what?
Sites like Boomkat (and most others) list all your downloads so you can re-download them if you lose them all anyway....so that's not a major issue (althoguh downloading all my MP3s again would be long).
I generally only buy Vinyl when it's not released digitally. This isn't because I prefer digi...obviously not...I just buy so much music I cannot warrant spending an extra £3/4 per release for a physical copy that I've then got to rip to get on my ipod.
I still have a decent vinyl collection...and will continue to buy it. I'd buy more vinyl if all labels offered digi downloads when you buy the physical copy though.
Edit: Although I agree with Shy...essentially, when I'm buying a digital release, I'm buying nothing. 1's and 0's. And while that does make me think I'm wasting my money, I'll be straight back on Boomkat come Monday.
I don't turn on Korn to get it on, I be playin Digi Mystikz 'til the dawn

Same. Before I bought vinyl (when I added a turntable to my hi fi system when I was 15) I bought CD, I think I've paid for less than 10 downloads. I'll only do it if it's download exclusive, otherwise I'll get it physically, it's just fucking better, whether you mix or not.

I like physical records, but prefer to get CDs over vinyl. It's just more convenient. If I had to choose between vinyl or digital download, I'd just buy the vinyl and download the record from a p2p.
Some records, I have on both vinyl and CD, though. Like 'Spiderland' by Slint. I do prefer the sound of vinyl records, but not because of the medium, but because albums are usually mastered better for vinyl than they are for CD.

its all about vinyl + d/l code for me.... Instra:mental album released just now - absolutely love the tunes but not stuff I would usually DJ. If I had to choose between d/l and vinyl I would have downloaded it and saved the difference in money for wax im more likely to mix. However as nonplus done the d/l + vinyl, everyone's a winner, nonplus get the highest revenue for the album, I get to own a lovely piece of wax but still have something to easily listen to on the tube in morning

labels take note!

Definitely think getting a download with vinyl is the way to go, definitely the way to keep vinyl alive.

yeah man, i'd love too see more labels do that. would be a proper time saver!!
they gaves a DL link for 320s with the james blake LP, and i know hospital records have been giving free MP3s with vinyls for ages.

I love the way that you can't imagine anyone going to the trouble of keeping a usb drive for backups, but you happily keep a grand's worth of turntables boxed up in your loft 'just in case'!

Last time I checked USB sticks hadnt stopped being produced?!
Getting a DL link/MP3 with a record is a great way to keep vinyl alive and a nice way to get more music for your buck! I think Be-1ne pointed out how good value buy a record actually was seeing as its not gone up in price in years and now you get an mp3 too! But I totally get not being a viable option and a costly one too but I guess people are just different, I like the fact I have something physical for my money! Feels like I actually own something!
