As does the massive advertising campaign to promote it over the only slightly less effective previous version that is going to run out of patent and so will have to drop in price. Sometimes the new drug isn't even any more effective or is actually more dangerous. Money would be far better spent of health education for prevention, most peoples' diseases requiring regular treatment are acquired i.e. preventable...
