Moving into more bro territory, I don't think Swagga by Excision & Datsik has been mentioned yet.

Ah yes I can't believe I forgot about that song! When I was getting into dubstep, that was one of the first songs I knew and all my friends who had heard any dubstep (mostly the Rottun dudes) had heard that song.

Now I don't know how it is elsewhere, but where I live (midwest US) when people hear dubstep, Skrillex is the first thing many people say. It seems like within the past year, a lot more people here have gotten into "dubstep", especially the girls. The nonstoner girls.

I've never once heard Skrillex in a club, or on the radio, or at a party or anything. IMO he's not that popular, and not dubstep.

If you feature a womp in your song, then it's a variation of dubstep. If you really want to limit everything in this forum to pure "dubstep" you're going to lose 90% of it's content.

Skrillex isn't the most popular dubstep artist . Why ? Because Skrillex isn't dubstep.

Scary Monsters, Scatta and First Of The Year are all dubstep, but he does have plenty of non-dubstep songs too

but back on topic, where i live its DEFINITELY anything by skrillex, especially smns. if i tell someone i like dubstep it's almost immediately followed by "oh so like skrillex?!?!" im not very knowledgeable on the whole dubstep scene so i couldn't really tell you, but overall i'd say Brostep - smns, sierra leonne, or woo boost Dubstep - anti-war dub, mrl

The YouTube comments on Haunted and Anti War Dub are depressing as fuck... Same goes for any pre-mainstream dubstep tune with a lot of views, but those two are the worst

I'm from Illinois (US midwest) and I can honestly say EVERYONE has pretty much heard of Skrillex by now. I remember when Skrillex was first coming up, a lot of people didn't really know who he was, then slowly but surely I heard the name Skrillex pop out from every direction. I went to a few parties out in the country and they were playing Skrillex, but a few weeks before that they had never even heard of him rather they were playing country music

Might I also add that I went to a Chicago Bears game on Sunday, and during halftime they played Skrillex - Cinema. So yea, this man is definitely going mainstream. I saw a mini interview about Lollapalooza with him on MTV as well. I give it another year and all you'll be hearing, at least here in the U.S. is Skrillex, Guetta, etc. The man has talent whether you like his music or not. And with that people should at least respect him for it.

I must add tho that Benga ft. Coki - Night seems like it should definately be on that list. For some reason I remember that very addicting synth melody even before I started getting into Dubstep. It was recognizeable the moment I heard it after getting into Dubstep. So I think that song definitely made its way into non-Dubstep listeners ears somehow?

Maybe not as mainstream, but anyone who listens to any kind of dance music knows it, house, techno, dubstep, whatever. Serious house heads wouldn't know any of the brostep stuff.

Also, hello to dubstepforums. I'm 23, I got started on dubstep with Excision/Datsik (specifically Datsik-Jenova Project, when I was looking for FF7 music on the tube) and other 'mid-range dubstep', but soon found my way to this website and fell in love with the deeper style of dubstep. Unfortunately, none of my friends/family share my musical tastes, so I can't really crank up my stereo or else people get mad



On-topic, noone that I've talked to has yet known what dubstep is, let alone Skrillex and others. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say Midnight Request Line, Night, Ancient Memories, etc.

I'm really surprised stuff like Skrillex has reached the mainstream. Brostep doesn't strike me as very accessible. IMO, there are a lot of tracks that have the potential to be more accessible for the casual music listener than Skrillex. Off the top of my head, I can think of James Blake's album, 'HYPH MNGO' (as the guy above said, anyone with a passing interest in dance music knew of this track, even some of my mates who just torrent the latest clubland album had this playing on their phones), Lando Kal - Further, in fact, a lot of the hotflush stuff.

Maybe if some of these tracks weren't so sample heavy, they'd be pushed a little more. Who knows?
