Mix while you make it, set up a template with a reveb channel and a couple of tracks with eq, compression or whatever on them. Then tweak everything after.

Mix down as you go. Then don't listen to the track for several days - open it up and give it a final mix down. You should only need to do minor tweaks, but they will make all the difference.

Mix down as you go then play with the master at the end (volume automation for fades etc)

but when I don't do that that, I mixdown as I go just so it's tolerable, then do it proper at the end.
